Got Replay TV tonight
Finally decided to get the thing, figured since I detest MOST of whats on the boob-tube I'd get a filter of sorts. Setup is kinda oddball at times, if you get the zipcode wrong, it does crazy stuff.
Small nit-picks aside, I think I'll enjoy viewing tele again. The neato commercial erase feature is magnificent. I just watched all of South Park with NO commercials, and the unit does the "editing" for ya. So, the scitzo Comdey Central bumpers are gone, no mention of Monistat 7, and nary a 10-10-220 commercial to be seen. I can get used to this.....
Waded over into the scheduled record section, set myself up for many hours of Adult Swin, Rally racing, and F1 racing, few select Samurai Jack showings. Now I can watch what I want when I want.
The ZONE is kinda spiffy too. It searches the listings for a certain genre of show, and displays a list, you can rummage thru em and select the ones to your tastes and record em, many days in advance. The unit knows when you double-up on a time and warns ya. I think the TIVO can record two at the same time, but I wanted a DVR that has ethernet connects, so I don't get that feature...oh well.
Y'all outta look into these doohickys, custom viewing....seems like a winner.

I gave Miss Manners a Dirty Sanchez, and she LIKED it.

Yup, I have the DirecTV/Tivo unit with two tuners. It'll record a couple of programs while I watch another...pretty sweet. I've found that my tube time has been cut in half. Now when I sit down, there's always something good on.
I dunno if Replay has it or not, but the Keyword searches are awesome. I have one that will record any program with "workshop" in the description, and another with "Vegas". There are a lot of shows on those upper cable channels that I never would have known about otherwise.
I'd go back to black and white TV before I gave up my PVR.
Enjoy!

i really REALLY need something like that. since i get home from work at 3:00am, my TV watching hours are 3:00am to 6:00am...... my choices of what i can watch should i choose to do so is DISMAL! (not really a TV watcher myself either, but sometimes TLC or Discovery The History Channel or whatever will have some good stuff). as i am getting ready for work, i see what will be on TV while i am not home and i think...... "maybe i should just call in sick so i can actually see some enjoyable TV for once.
i dont know how much the pricing has changed since i shopped for one as a x-mas present for my mother (maybe 2 or 3 years ago), but at that time the most basic unit was ~$200, and the service was ~$12 a month.

i am not 100% sure you need the service. i think that;s so the unit can retrieve program listings and integrate that into it's functions. you may be able to still use it like a fancy digital VCR (just program the record times and channels into it) with time shift ability and such.
not 100% sure on that though.

here's the pricing

On June 1, 2003 ReplayTV Service prices will increase from a $9.95 per month or $250.00 one-time fee, to a $12.95 per month or $299.99 one-time fee. However, existing customers in good standing will be locked in at today's low-prices and will not be asked to pay any additional fees.
So, if you've been considering purchasing another ReplayTV now is the time to do it. All units that activate Service by May 31, 2003 will be able to take advantage of the current low prices.
I have ultimateTV, which is basically the same thing as realtv and tivo. Definately worth every penny. It's changed our for the better, however pathetic that sounds. We were lucky to pick up the ultimateTV unit when they still cost $100. They dont sell them anymore.
it's not even about the commerical skipping for me. It's about freedom of choice and really making the most of your time in front of the b**b tube.

I want a computer so good it must be used for evil. I want to walk out of Apple SoHo with a golden aura. I want anti-gravity bluetooth. I want a computer that chases squirrels and steals your picnic lunch. I want a computer that gets bored while I'm at work and prank-calls Microsoft tech support. I want WiFi control over my coffee maker. And my roommate. And the cat. I want the ability to hijack passing iPods. I want a computer that reduces fat while locking in savory chicken flavor. I want four on the floor and a fuzzy 970 chip hanging from the rearview. I want an Airport station that cleans my laundry with sonic waves. I want a keyboard with gold teeth. I want fries with that.

If you have DirecTV, the addtional charge for the Tivo is only 5 bucks a month. I started out with a standalone unit and was using it with my AT&T cable. I wasn't happy with the picture quality on my big screen. (I am very picky!)
After some research, I decided to go with Directv. The picture is much, much better, because the signal does not need to be converted from analog to digital. The unit records the directv digital feed, and the playback is exactly the same as if you were watching it live via the dish.
Go here for all you could ever want to know about the Tivo PVR.
