Cypher??? Any thoughts??
I want a computer so good it must be used for evil. I want to walk out of Apple SoHo with a golden aura. I want anti-gravity bluetooth. I want a computer that chases squirrels and steals your picnic lunch. I want a computer that gets bored while I'm at work and prank-calls Microsoft tech support. I want WiFi control over my coffee maker. And my roommate. And the cat. I want the ability to hijack passing iPods. I want a computer that reduces fat while locking in savory chicken flavor. I want four on the floor and a fuzzy 970 chip hanging from the rearview. I want an Airport station that cleans my laundry with sonic waves. I want a keyboard with gold teeth. I want fries with that.

well i have found that my job has put too many demands on me.
at first i was an apprentice
then i was an installer
then a foreman/ estimator
THEN>> an estimator/ employer/bookkeeper/ manager/ installer who was expected to wash the company van.
Way too many demands were put on me and i was about to break.
what it comes down to is doing a good job (do what you are good at!) for me it was an installer/ estimator
sometimes hiring someone can help, but if you hire someone when you are busy then it can be frustrating to have to take precious time to train them.
I would suggest making a list of what demands are expected from you and focus on doing what you enjoy and are good at. Tell your employer that he or she needs to find someone to help.

Sure.
Tried that...LOL
After after us lower managment porta potties{employee supervisors} tried to push back a bit, we got told alright, we will hire 3 back up supervisors, now the kicker, when we take holidays and a back up supervisor takes our place for a week if they do good we might not have our job to came back to after our holidays. I love being threatened daily, and even my holidays are now a threat against me
I must say I am so sick of stress from my job that I can't even think straight anymore. Our company rules with fear, do this or else, do that or else. Every friggin aspect of our work day has an or else attached.
Cant even go to the crapper at work without seeing a sign that says if you are waisting toilet paper and caught you will be terminated.
I have never worked in such negativity in my life.
So far the new millenium suck in my opinion.
Glad I only have 20 years to go before I'm dead or retired whichever comes first. If I was just starting out I think I'd just kill myself and save myself the stress.

I'm in so much crap at work right now, I'm scared I'm going to get fired.
I missed Friday, Monday and yesterday I pissed off one customer so badly that he made me leave the site. He couldn't fix the problem, so he calls CompUSA, we do commercial work for CompUSA so I had to go fix the problem. Running a workgroup with NT4 and he wonders why he can't get a printer to print through the network and "why do I need accounts on the server?" To make a long story short, he didn't like how I pointed out how many problems he had, and when I said he had "a hornets nest of problems" he flipped and told me to leave. I shook his hand and said that if ever wanted the network fixed right, to call me back.
I don't like this rage in me lately, sometimes I just feel like knocking some people clean the f**k out!.

Going back 20 years and being a Janitor was so much happier time in my life. Maybe thats what I should do, go cut grass or mop floors again for a livin.

Illeagal yes
Do they get away with it....YES!!!
And you are right, my employer does not give a **** about anyone.
I'm almost tempted to put them in a position to fire me right now just so they have to cut me a severance check, add that to my unused holiday pay and Leiu days and I'll have a month or 2's money to live on while I look for that janitor job

some people become institutionalized after being at the same job for too long. They dont know anything else and they fear what exists beyond their job.
I ditched my job into the ground after 17 years( 1/2 my life)
people still call me every other day wanting this or that and i have to tell them i dont do that anymore. Its not easy as i realize people are offerring extra money because they liked my workmanship... why did i ever sell myself short?.

I get the snot kicked out of me regularly at work. Not by my boss (who knows how difficult my position is), but by my well protected union employees.
I take solace in the fact that I am going home to a wonderful house, a beautiful wife and two great kids.
If that's not enough, always remember to get a good night's sleep. More often than not, I have found that what seems like a big deal today, won't be an issue tommorow.

When they kick at your front door, how you gonna come? With your hands at your head, or the trigger of your gun?
Chris you can go to employment standards branch and explain your situation. your employer would probably pay you severance no questions asked if purseuded by employment standards.
if you like any thing about your job explain to your employer what you think your job description is. try to negotiate. If they wont listen tell them your going to employment standards. Then maybe your employer will bend his ass over and take some government schlong

Other key points I try to bear in mind are:
- Events occur in cycles.
- Try not to become too consumed or caught up in the daily grind.
- It's best to just walk away and deflate at times and approach the task from a different vantage point.
- Take it all in stride. If you're doing the best you can that's all that really matters.
It's the bosses job to get as much out of you that is possible. It's your reasponability to constantly evolve and increase your cappacity and skill set to meet these gowing demands. Yet you also have to be able to establish a buffer of sorts, and not take it all to heart in the process. While not compromising the necessity for offline pursuits which are both crucial to releiving stress and job performance as well. Perception is another powerfull element to consider. The way we view things has major impact on how we deal with them. Reality is both transformed and wrought by the way we precieve it.

Yup.....try working in IT....that can get stressful, and sometimes you just feel like beating your head against a wall. But the rewards of my job really outweigh the bad. Meeting lots of people for often extended periods of time, always being challenged by something different you have to learn and overcome, completing jobs and seeing the fruit of all your work, etc.
But if your job is constantly bad...remember..."You're in control of your job and what you do, where you work." Don't like it...time to move onto something else. I'm 36..you know how many careers I've been in already? Restaurant, florist, law enforcement, first aid, bartending, and now on my second computer job.

I'm in the corporate IT dept for the co I work for...right now is pretty scary. The economy sucks so bad that our 2 largest customers are pulling out to try themselves what we have been doing for them for years. So basically our entire organization is going WTF!?! They have been letting people go left and right and that fact isn't too comforting. Especially when you have a mortgage, car payment, wife, 2yr old, and expensive hobbies
Oh well.......there's always the shotgun in the closet......not for me...for my bosses when the ax falls

I'm in the corporate IT boat as well and let me take this oppurtunity to rant a bit..
<long rant> Our company is in big trouble... Lawsuits against us all over the place.. Attorney General investigations,.. you name 'em.. they're after us.. The people runnin' this place have a bad rap/ criminal backgrounds, etc... I hope nobody delivers a bomb to one of our buildings.
Major IT decisions are forced upon our IT director without consulting any of us first only to then realize after they spend thousands on phone system upgrades that it won't be able to do what they thought it could do or they pay for extreme overkill technology and cause budget shortages in other important areas. People who complain simply disappear.
good example:
they have been planning on taking down our largest call center... tearing out the cubicles, cable drop poles, EVERYTHING.. and replacing the carpet, getting 50 new cubicles with a totally different layout which requires re-cabling the layout all over again AS WELL as merge the phone systems between the two buildings which aren't connected in anyway (separate domains & phone systems)...
Problem #1: They didn't plan on telling the IT dept about this until a week before it was all expected to happen.
Problem #2: They didn't realize the phone system & fiber pipe between buildings would run them almost a million dollars after everything is said and done AND it couldn't possibly be done in a weeks time.
Problem #3: They've f***ed over every vendor or outsource company (many of them are suing us as well) so we can barely outsource any of the work which means me and my 3 co-workers are responsible for doing the cabling and getting all the technical work done. WE HAVE HOME DEPOT TOOLS NOT REAL TOOLS... think you can do a good solid job of cabling an entire call center with just a pair of crimpers and a tone generator? We've managed so far for over a year now, but when we run into problems they quickly become stressful nightmares.. Not to mention that a year ago, not one of us had any experience with real serious cabling.. making a simple cat5 cable, sure, but cabling up an entire sales floor, cubicles and all is a bit different. I feel like a damn cabling jedi master now after all the miracles we've pulled off so far.. but regardless of how good we become we still don't have the necessary means to do the job the way its supposed to be done.
Problem #4: They insist we continue to buy cheap $40 printers and then set them up in offices so 10 or so people can share the printer and complain all the time because it locks up or doesn't work well with such large volumes of network printing.
Problem #5: We are seriously out of bandwidth.. 12 T-1's between the 2 buildings.. some voice. some data.. but lets squeeze in 40 new employees this month, upgrade the phone system and worry about bandwidth after we settle some legal issues with our past T-1 providers..
Problem #6: People move back and forth between buildings & domains & phone systems ALL THE TIME AND DONT BOTHER TO TELL US!! therefore, a week later when they can't log on the network or can't access the shares, or can't possibly have the same phone extension they had in the other building and they haven't been able to do their work, we are expected to drop what we are doing and remedy the situation IMMEDIATELY! Nevermind that one of my biggest solo projects has been to enforce a naming scheme based on the computers location so we know where PC's are located on the network. I can just throw any naming scheme right out the window until they bolt lock the computers to the floor or install cameras b/c they move or disappear constantly.
I could go on, but its pointless.
On the good side.. my co-workers and I are well paid and jobs like this aren't really hiring too much in the Orlando area. That makes it hard to walk away from the situation.. THAT and the way I see it, if I can keep this place runnin', then I could surely take care of a company that has their sh** together..
</long rant>
oh man.. what do ya do? TGIF!! & PAYDAY!! w00h00!

Koldchillah, I fully sympathize with you, I could tell stories for hours with the same thought behind it (management making IT decisions), but in the end I would be wasting my breath. What it really comes down to, as you put so well

thanks guys.. I thnk the fact that I'm sick with the flu and feeling absolutely miserable today has sorta fueled my rant.. I hate getting sick right before the weekend. Luckily this was the weekend that they were supposed to be tearing up the sales floor call center, but they cancelled and I can get some rest rather than sleeping in my office and running cable while I'm awake.
Norm, I sincerely appreciate the vote of confidence.. I just hope that someday I can actually FIND that job. The IT industry is so competitive these days.. I suppose my phone system experience will be my selling point to those companies who need a "jack of all trades" type of tech.
To make matters worse,, when my boss handed me my check today he told me to go cash it immediately b/c there are rumors that payroll will be bouncing checks this weekend..
just wonderful, isn't it?
have a good weekend fellas!

bad time on the job..
I'm a Union Rep @ work and i was once Union President, of our local. Everyone wants u on call 24/7 for anything, even if its something like , how many vacation days after 3 yrs of service? (Uh its in the Union book i gave u, the 3rd one, since u lost the other 2.) If i lose a grievance, even when the member had no obvious chance, i;m the bad guy. If i win a grievance, every supervisor in the building gives me the evil eye". So i cant even enjoy the satisfaction of helping someone, who without a union, would have been unfairly discharged.
To top it off the company has been in the business for 115 yrs now, at the same location, same building. We are in the historic business district. Thats a zoning law someone passed for a bunch of aging buildings that need to be bulldozed. Its a 5 story building, and the 5th floor and 2nd floor are haunted, why i dont know, but when we had a night shift, seemed like a new guy was quitting all the time, if they had to go to the 5th floor to get material, etc. I have seen a few things myself, and i took pictures of the areas, defintely something demonic up there. Then the company heard i took some pics, and they said i was inciting a riot, i was gonna tarnish the image, slander their product with stories like that. Who wants to buy a product from a haunted factory? Plus my wife has been off work for 5 months now, we met there at work, she has a bad knee from her HS. basketball days. But other than something like the above situations, happening every day there, we are a big happy family @ work~

Ummm...not necessarily...Get your cards in order first...
If you have a better job to go too..then yes. But don't quit....It doesn't look good on a resume.
Even though it's tough, grit and bear it. Work hard, show you know your job without being too forceful and in time, things will click...one way or another. Employers like to see employee's who stick it out on a resume.
Secondly, it's an income....
Good luck...
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, and prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children and the children yet unborn and the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.
Thanks guys, i feel better about my job now.
I work by myself, my closest boss is about a 3.5 hour drive away, don't see any other employees of my company for usually 3-4 months at a time. I run a small warehouse for my company, and i am responsible for sales & distribution for my area. I am pretty much out of the loop, last to hear everything, but that's a good thing sometimes. I work about 50 hours a week, but if things are slow i can run errands during the day or something like that, but also i don't get any days off except for scheduled holidays or vacation days (which i have to take 1 week at a time minimum), but I can't take any sick days.

Hmmm...guess that's a totally different world...working in IT for some company where you just take care of it.
I work pretty much solo...have many many clients to take care of. All different types, law offices, medical offices, dentists, dealers, this, that, the other. Any type of office you can think of that runs computers...I setup/support them.
Some days...your cell phone rings with tons of 911's. While you're in the middle of some install or something you just can't leave, someone else is screaming for you to drop what you're doing and race over there.
