TCP/IP tweaks for Vista

The never ending quest to achieve maximum broadband speed in Windows Vista continues. The latest suggestion is to use the netsh line command to enable Compound TCP and Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN). Any thoughts on that or other speed tweaks?

Read up on Compound TCP. Without the quotes type "netsh interface tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp" at the command line. It is a simple and efficient Vista IP tweak;the only one you need. Vista's auto-tuning feature pretty much maximizes your network speed out of the box.

IMHO, the Vista TCP/IP stack is way more sophisticated than the Optimizer Tweak. The only tweak to Vista IP settings should be to enable Compound TCP with the "netsh interface tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp" command. Omit the quotes.

Maybe there is a firewalled router connected to the cable modem. Disable the firewall at the router and run tracert again. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

best Speed Tests

Besides the SpeedGuide test; my favorite connection speed tests are:

http://www.speedtest.net ... GUI pretty as Paris Hilton.
http://nitro.ucsc.edu ...........thorough and detailed results.
IPerf.................................best tool to accurately measure internal lan speed.

any more cool ...

Is there any real need to monkey with tweaking programs? IMHO, if you simply set MTU at 1500 and RWIN at 128480...your computer is fully armed, loaded and ready to handle anything Internet related.
