I've built both AMD and Pentium systems. I like the AMD's myself and think the Athalon is the way to go, but. And this is a big BUT. It's been my feeling that windows is optimized for intel chipsets. That's not to say that you'll have problems with AMD cpus and non-intel mobo's but I just found them ...

I have an athalon 1 gig system too. It has 4 fans in it. One is in the power suply, one in the front part of the case, one on the VIA bridge chip and one on a rather large heatsink right on the CPU. It stays plenty cool with that. It sounds like the system your're working on could use another fan to ...

No help at all, I think
This is an good Tech support story. I've been having a problem with the surround mixer that came with my SB Live. Every time I try to run it I get a plug in error. So after exhausting everyhting I could think about I called thier tech support line. It's automated and eventually I got to the choice ...

Honestabe, the problem doesn't occur that regular. It's most likely to occur while streaming a vid or sometimes when I play UT especially between levels when I'm downloading a map that's not on my HD. It's very wierd in that it almost seems like it's what it says it is the CPU is just too busy to go ...

DannJR, your suggestion was close, I think. I made the change to my registry, rebooted and tried the same file, actually it's a stream of the Halo movie for Xbox. It did stop again but it did not BSOD me. I was able to shut it down and go back to browsing. Wierd but I'm still certain its a win98 ...

Has anyone ever encountered this little problem. I'm running an Athalon 1 gig, Abit KT7ARaid with 128 MB ram under Win98SE, what is happening is this. Some times when downloading a very large file over my @Home connection I get a BSOD "system busy" warning and I have to reboot. This usually happens ...

Is this an IRQ conflict
My NIC and SB Live share IRQ 11, everyhting works fine and Win98SE says there is no conflict. But once in a while I'll be playing UT when the system will hang and I get the BSOD "system busy" message. It usually happens between levels when I'm downloading a map ubt it also happened in a game. Could ...

The problem with the look of PC gmaes is developers have to scale the game so it'll be playable on the majority of systems. So right now DC or PS2 games might look on par with the likes of current PC games. I haven't seen anyhting on the PS2 that blows away what I've seen on the PC or even DC for ...

A NIC question
I'm still having problems with IE but I think I'm closer to solving it. I noticed that my NIC is on IRQ 10 and so is the ACPI controller on my mobo. Could this be the cause for me IE halting? Should I try putting the NIC into a different slot? It doesn't occur with any regularity so I'm reluctant to ...

I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this. I'm browsing along when all of the sudden I come up to a site where IE will freeze. My mouse still works but the pointer remains in the same spot. I can still move around the web page with the keyboard or even the mouse just not the pointer. However ...

Storm90 thanks for your input. I've been through my reg and startup files with a fine toothed comb and it looks like everyhting there is there for a reason. I tried those and I downloaded a bootlog analyizer from ZDnet. It shows that some of my devices, my net card & USB camera in particular load twice, both with delays. Also the biggest delay is for a tape controller detection. I don't have a tape drive but I do have a zip. I've found the key in the ...

Windows boot take forever
I was just wondering how long is too long. I have a 1 gig Athalon system with 128 MB of ram and it takes 2 1/2 minutes to fully load win98 SE. Is there anyhting I can do to speed things up. I've cut back on the number of programs that load in my sys tray. Is there anyhting else I could try or is ...

Yes you have to verify the IRQ for the new slot. Another thing that might happen too is Windows will reinstall the NIC in the new slot and keep the one in the old, they'll conflict and you won't get any service. Mine did that, scared me too for a couple minutes until I figured out what happened. On ...

The good or bad of what Napster does is a debate for another board. I do think there may be some benefits to shutting napster down but it may be too broad to reall effect a noticable change. At the same time who is to say that one use of the net is better than the other. Is downloading MP3's a worse ...

Windows Registry question
I think I have this right but just want to make sure. Many of the cable modem tweaks are string value additions to the registry. For example MaxMTU="1500" My quesiton is, I create a key MaxMTU= then, do I need to put MaxMTU=1500 as the full valuse or just 1500?

What to do with PTSNOOP
I've noticed a running app, PTSNOOP.exe, which I think is some sort of web checking program, on my system. Does anyone know how to get rid of it or keep it from loading? What does it really do? I can't find any documentation about it and it is something of a memory hog.
