Hard drive corrupted - how to retrieve data?

Hello all!

I have a friends hard drive that is corrupted with bad sectors. It wont even finish scandisk, it perpetually scans a certain directory(not a windows directory, a data files directory). If I try to delete this directory it says data error.

Obviously that area of the drive is damaged ...

Reassign drive letters in XP?

Hello all - this should be an easy one:

New computer running XP. OS is on C:
CD/RW is D:

When I put in a 2nd hard drive, it retains the CDRW as drive D and assigns drive E to the new hard drive. In older comps that I've done this, the 2nd hard drive becomes D and the CDR gets bumped to E. Its a ...

IT came preinstalled from Dell with Windows XP Pro and the hard drive is formatted with NTFS. I'm debating reinstalling right off the bat; however its running so nicely that I don't want to bother ...

OK, one more thing:

Just got a call from the Dell tech - difference between the 9700 TX and 9700 Pro is speed. Pro runs at 324 mhZ, the TX runs at 263.

Will this make a huge difference or am I ok with the slower speed?

For $100 upgrade I can get an 128MB DDR ATI RadeonT 9700 TX Video card w/DVI and TV-Out.
