I used to do just what you do. Convert MP3 to wav then burn it into cda format.

Then I found musicmatch www.musicmatch.com . Now I just go from MP3 to CDA format without creating wav files. ;)

Yes. You want to disable plug n play feature in your motherboard and set IRQ separately in bios if your board allows you.

Then again, if all are working fine. Leave it be. :)

There are lots of ways that causes lockups.

What you would like to do is to create a checklist of factors that migh caused your lockups. Let's do a process of elimination:

Here are a few tips:
Overheating causes lockups
IRQ conflicts
Failing powersupply
Software conflicts

Please don't do anything drastic for now.

You can revert back to the lastknown configuration by hitting the spacebar when booting up. If you don't get this far...

Start with minimum configuration.

Minimum configuration meaning: remove extra memory 64mb to start, remove sound cards, ethernet ...

Best of yet, it is best to have different partitions for WinME and Win2k. You will need approximately atleast 500mb for WinMe and 1.5Gb for Win2K of harddrive space.

The reason for the price increase is that it gives you more features. Some manufacturer features allows you to connect 5.1 speakers, front game console connections and maybe an expansion card for your midi etc...

You are right...if you don't need the extra features most of the sound card ...

There are several ways to approach your problem...

First, connect the cable modem to nic#1.

Second, connect nic#2 to the switch where all your computers are plugged in.

Third, you could send me that router because you don't need it. :)
