XPTools

Post by Norm »

Hi all, just a short post to make available something I've made up for XP. It takes some of the stress out of searching for all those apps and properties spread out over the XP system, and puts them all (ok, most) in one place for easy access with a few links to help sites/tweak sites and a couple of free apps.

A few weeks ago I selected a few members to help test this and so far no negative reports. If you find any problems, please report them to me so I can fix them. I have personally not found any problems yet.

XPTools Download

Unzip and install. Do not change the install directory.
Once install completes, you will see a new addition at the TOP of your start menu "XPTools"
Take it from there.

Note:
There will be no registry changes, or settings changes by installing this app, and no dll's are installed, but keep in mind when using any of the apps included, or changing any XP properties, or settings, DOES make system/registry changes.
ALWAYS backup your registry before making any new changes (for safety sake)

All suggestions/ideas will be considered for any future update.

That's OK Norm, I was wondering when you'd show up again...don't be so hard on yourself.

Hope you're doing well :)

If you do a search for your name you'll see I tried to track you down to give you some feedback but no one knew or was saying where you went.

That said, what was this program you're talking about? :D

I've been sick as a dog for almost a week now and haven't done much computer work, but I'll make a point of trying out some more of your 'Tools. The one thing that I remember is a small grammatical error on your installation window...other then that no problems at all with the things I know how to use.

More to come...

Hmmm, it was my intention to get the best people available to test it.
Along with being an XP user, intelligence, trust, and an ability to delete files were the qualities I looked for.

How did you get on the list Humboldt? :D
Did you hack my list?

jk of course
Looking forward to your feedback.
BTW - What's the grammer error?

Norm, to be brutally honest, I haven't really dug into the new tools too much as of yet. They were a seamless install, and so transparent in fact, that I haven't noticed much of a difference from the old ones. I still use em daily, so I guess the package works fine. I'm still tickled pink with em, and no issues as far....good job eh?

Hiya Norm!!

No problems here...I'll play around with them some more. Great little proggie, by the way. :)

Nice to see that smiling face around here again. :)
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, and prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children and the children yet unborn and the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I really do need to know if there are any problems in order to fix them. So far so good. Not one mistake yet [crosses fingers]
I spent a lot of time testing this and making changes

I made a similar install for Win98 and added a ramdrive with options for different sizes. The 70 mb size actually tried to create a 700 mb ramdrive, and I never did get around to fixing it lol Oh well, no one uses 98 anymore besides myself and TonyT anyway.
Don't be a Tony

For those who have never used any of my Tools apps let me explain them. For the most part they are just shortcuts to apps/properties already in windows. I added a few extra freeware apps, and a few web links as well. It's not really a program install. It creates a bunch of shortcuts at the TOP of the 'start' menu so you/I don't need to go clicking through windows to get to what we need to use.

I have made versions for 98, 2K, and XP for anyone interested.

Sid, Here's a copy
for you of the 2K version

Yard, I forgot to mention that they appear at the TOP when using 'classic' mode. If you're using the default menu view, I believe you'll find them in "All Programs" not positive on that, but they are in your start menu, look around. If you can't find them, let me know.
There is a dir created in X:\Program Files named XPTools (X being the %homedrive%. Inside that dir is another XPTools dir. Copy/paste that dir anywhere you like, that's the dir with all the shortcuts. If you noticed a Dos window while installing, it is that Dos batch file that copies the XPTools dir to the top of the 'start' menu.

What's the problem snake?

It's about the easiest ramdrive to install I've seen yet.

Do you have any other ramdrive installed?
Did you find the GUI in control panel?

Give me more info.

EA had a hard time with other ramdrives, but had no problem at all with this one.

it tells me " the installation failed [error 18] sometimes, other times i go to install it and it says ram disk is stopped after it installs, if i reboot it does the same thing.

what operating mode should i have it set to ram disk mode or emulate a local hard disk ?

and yes i see it in the control panel but not in my computer

I never change anything snake. I install it, reboot, then change only the size. Leave everything else as default. Then reboot again and I see my ramdrive in "My Computer"

Try uninstalling it, redownload it (in case it got corrupted) and use defaults when you reinstall it.

I wonder why some peoples configurations have problems when others don't.

Hmmm, do what I posted above first.

Make sure you don't give the ramdrive a letter you are already using on another drive too.

If I remember correctly, the default is 'ramdrive' not 'emulate a HD'

[edit] Another mistake lol, it was the 75 mb size that was writing to autoexec.bat a size of 750 mb[/edit] Not the 70 mb size (there was NO 70mb size)

United, if you use it, I'm sure you can edit the line in autoexec.bat to any size you like. You probably remember the old ems ramdisk, that I used too. It allows a size max of 2 GB (must be in kb in autoexec.bat though)

I've wondered about this problem with the AR-Soft ramdrive. I've never had a problem with it, while others have. I'd love to track down the problem, so if anyone with problems wants to help please stand up.

I figure it must be a setting, or something different on a machine with problems that isn't the same on machines without problems.

Some ideas...

1. Possibly NTFS is the problem ?(I use FAT32)
2. Maybe DDR ram ?(I use SDram)
3. AMD CPU ? (I use Intel)
4. Logged on as Admin, or with Admin rights when installing it? (I am)
5. Other ramdrive already installed? (not here) but if I remember correctly I used the MS ramdrive along with this one at the same time, no problem.
6. Hiding drives, or 'Lastdrive' setting changed by an app, or manually? (not here)

If anyone can vouch for the Ar-Soft ramdrive under any of the above circumstances it would be a step towards an understanding of the problem. We may be able to track down what's up eventually.
I'm leaning towards a problem with NTFS, so if anyone is using NTFS and this ramdrive without problems, please post and let me know.
Any other ideas, or would be appreciated as well.

1 use nfts
2 use ddr
3 use intel
4 always admin
5 none
6 none

might have it installed as a virtual HD. I used it only for ie cache. I did have a lot of problem downloading normal things that were over the 30megs, even though I would download to another partition. It would use the X: (ramdrive) as a temp drive for some reason. Might have caused it.

I am inclined to agree. I could not get it to function under 2K or XPpro, both utilizing NTFS.

It did work for months... then it stopped working properly. wierd errors... just not system wide not right.

me thinks it might have been linked to an update cause I even used a ghosted image... and it still gave me problems. Cant remember what problems, cause that was many problems ago.

Well that rules out NTFS, AMD, and DDR. Thanks zooner

Welcome ddrdoug99 good to know it's being used and appreciated. I was just in my "options" here at Sg and noticed you are on my buddy list. You are the only entry too. I don't remember ever using that option, but hey good buddies are hard to find. Glad to be yours :)

The version of the XPTools I posted is about 330 kb. I also have a personal version that's 17 MB with tons of freeware apps, mostly standalone exe files, some games, and the install for some apps I like to have on hand. I find it comes in very handy to install most of my fav proggies all at once, and have them all in one place. Hope everyone enjoys the ease of access I tried to make for the windows apps etc.
It was quite the learning experience for me hacking through windows to get this made. Someday I may even write up the whole proccess, and post it as a web page. Anyone could do this and more with the installer I use, and a bit of knowledge about basic Dos and where windows puts things. The hard part was more tedious than brain draining. All the shortcuts had to be made manually, so they would work on any XP machine installed on any drive.

<Bump>
I may bump this thread a few times over the next couple of days so everyone sees it. I only have 5 MB of freespace to hold these files and others so I clean it out often. Just want to give everyone the chance to get the files before I remove them.

Ok, as you were...

Snake,

I downloaded the 98 tools from the site you provided, and appear to be getting "invalid archive" messages. I am using Winzip 8.1, so that should not be the problem. Would it be possible to upload it again to see if the file itself is corrupted?

Thanks,

waferdog

PS attempted to extract with WinRar also and received an error there.

Snake got the tools98 file before I replaced it. I originally stopped the upload in progress, that's why it was corrupted.

I sent snake a PM to get the good file and switch them.
