1-8 KB/s????!! please help me

Post by joesievers »

hi, i recently got cable and am having ridiculous speed issues. we have an RCA modem plugged into a quality linksys router. there are four of us sharing it through a wireless network. im using a linksys USB adapter.

any ideas why i would be downloading at 1-8 KB/s? my usual speed is 2-6 but i get .5 KB/s as a low and 14 KB/s as a high. i live in a semi-metro area, but i think 4 KB/s on cable is scandalous, even if we are sharing. it can take up to 15-20 seconds to download a site with IE 6.0. ive used the patch from this site as well as other optimization tools.

i also have a little tool that gives me a visual representation of my connection, and it comes out as a whole bunch of extremely sharp spikes (going down to zero, then spiking up again).

here's my little diagnostic.

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 47 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

please help!

i forgot to add that there are very frequent long pauses, between 1 and 10 seconds, where nothing downloads. so the spikes on my graph can get far apart.

i just tried the opera browser for the first time because it was supposed to be fast, but the dl speed said 2 KB/s and it took 30-40 seconds to load cbs.sportsline.com.

i also forgot to add that the other users on the network have very similar problems.

Welcome to Speedguide :D , you have allot of things against you. First wireless routers aren't the best because there are many factors that can effect their performance, then you are connecting via USB...... terrible, anything for the internet that connects via USB has nothing but problems. What are your ISPs caps? No matter who it is if you are splitting it 4 ways that RWIN is way too high. To narrow down the problem try power cycling your modem (disconnect power for atleast 15 seconds) and directly connect your pc to the modem by itself and see what your speed is like, that way you will know if it's the router or not. Please post back the and let us know what you find out. :)

well im plugged directly into the modem and... according to netmonitor, my "truespeed" is between 450 and 1200 kb/s. still hardly flying but definitely much faster. plus it tends to pause for long periods in the middle of downloads. im using cablenut's default "normal cable" registry settings. any advice (besides returning my usb adapter and buying another one of these extra long ethernet cables for myself)?

What is your average latency (ping)? If you are using the settings you posted above then you aren't using Cablenut's defualt settings, what are your ISPs caps and what OS are you using? :)

Your not answering the questions I'm asking, I'm trying to figure out your problem and I need more information. :)

Hehehe - I had to laugh at Windows ME.... it wouldn't suprise me if that's the problem :p . Anyway, Comcast's caps are 1500/128, that being the case try the following settings in Cablenut:

BcastNameQueryCount - 1
BcastQueryTimeout - 100
BSDUrgent - 1
CacheTimeout - 600000
DefaultRecvWindow - 32120
DefaultTTL - 64
EnableDNS - 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindoSize - 32120
KeepAliveInterval - 500
KeepAliveTime - 14400000
Lanabase - 0
LocalCopyMade - 1
MaxConnections - 64
MaxConnectRetries - 5
MaxDataRetries - 64
NameTableSize - 255
NameSrvQueryTimeout - 100
PMTUBlackHoleDetect - 0
PMTUDiscovery - 1
RoutingBufSize - 146432
RoutingPackets - 100
SackOpts - 1
SessionKeepAlive - 7200
SessionTableSize - 255
Size/Small/Medium/Large - 3
Tcp1323Opts - 0
TcpTimedWaitDelay - 30
MaxDupAcks - 2
DefaultTOS - 92
IGMPLevel - 2
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server - 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer - 10

Try PC Pitstops Ping Utility to check your latency.

GREAT :D , those pings are ok and might be as good as you are going to get with your setup. Also over 1000kb/s is great with that setup, you might even try raising your GlobalMaxTcpWindoSize/DefaultRecvWindow to 52560 or 64240, if your speed drops then just go back to 32120..... it's a major improvement over what you had anyway. :) :D

Most likely because of your setup..... the wireless router and USB connection.... not good for optimum latency. :)

You might have a line problem, a bad connection or a bad splitter somewhere. Also did you power cycle your modem earlier? :)

ive been wondering this all along. it seems like my connection speed keeps jumping around, from 0 to 2000 (it spends a lot of time at 0). is this normal at all?

Nope, that is most likely a line problem that you should have your ISP come out and check the frequencies on your line. :)

To properly setup your cable modem the RG6 coax cable should split right where it comes into the house and have one side go directly to your modem and the other side go to all the tv's in your house splitting it as necessary, if it's not set up that way then you will experience the type of problems you are having. :) ;)

we found out by accident that the problem is my friend's computer. when it's on, his wireless card sucks up 97% of the bandwidth and all of the whatever it is that gives you low latency for online games =). his connection didnt necessarily seem all that fast, but when his computer is turned on we all go from 1200 kb/s and low pings to 20 kb/s and pings in the 3-4000s! we'll probably end up getting him to stop using his wireless card and to just plug in. i dont think the usb adapter or even the cable company (amazing huh?) is to blame, although there may be other minor problems with them. thanks for your help though!
