Didn't know we HAVE an optimizer.

The SG Optimizer has no licence file, so it has no legal protection, other than copyright.
As long as it's distibuted free, they're not doing anything wrong.

[edit] I just saw the virus headsup. so yeah, they're doing something wrong :) [/edit]

Once they get a trojan on your PC, they can control it, and have YOUR PC do they're dirty work. With multiple PC's working for them, they can down a site with DoS attacks etc
eg: Yahoo.com grc.com

I downed the file too, and checked it with AVG "no virus detected"

Noevo, could you try downing the Speedguide version and see if it detects that same virus, just curious since AVG missed it.
It might be a false positive.

the real deal, TCPOptmizer.exe scans clean as a whistle.

the one from that site, warning number one, is called install.zip and the zip conained a file called install.exe.

Thanks, I was curious.

AVG didn't catch it, damn. I don't want to use norton for a few reasons, but if AVG can't tell a virus from a clean file, what good is it. Virus defs are updated too.

Thanks again Noevo.

Well, seeing as how he's thanking him not for the program but for finding the trojan IN the program, why would he? :D

Good find though, Jesse23.

Sorry Jesse, I didn't mean to snub you. I got caught up in the virus thing and forgot about the man who found this in the first place.
Thanks for posting it.

Good find :)

How did you come across it?
Were you just surfing and got lucky, or were you searching for Tweaks, or something else?

I did Yard, I extracted the install.exe to my desktop and used that online scanner.

It didn't find anything either.

Is Norton the ONLY scanner that catches this virus, or is anyone using a different scanner that has caught it?

Please, anything but norton !!

I've had so much trouble with Norton's programs in the past, I don't want to risk it anymore. 2001 was a nightmare for many. I've been asked to remove it from many systems, and it doesn't like to leave. Caused errors in bootup by leaving traces in the registry/autoexec.bat, plus it was a real resourse hog. I also tried a few other Norton products in the past.

One real winner was the crash gaurd. I never crashed till I installed it, then it was crash every few minutes lol

I've heard that 2002 is good, haven't heard any bad publicity yet, but still have the fear. :D

I just *now* bought Anti-Virus 2002. Runnin like a champ too. It has add blocking, very nice controls for cookies, built-in firewall, that keeps ya informed(I like it better than ZA so far). The virus definition found that litmus virus too, whereas Innoculate it did not. I'll keep ya informed Norm, I think its a winner myself.

Norm, I had forgotten about all that other junk Norton has. I don't care for much of his other stuff, but I don't think Norton's Antivirus Corporate Edition can be beat. I have about ten of my clients running it with probably about 400 PC's between them, I haven't had a problem yet that I can pinpoint to Nortons.

Lol, yeah, it seems those scores of mine are a little whacked....I should be pulling in the 1000-1100 range, but for some reason, I keep getting around 2000-2400...very strange...

Speaking of Antivirus, does it hurt to have multiple AV programs going? For instance, if I set up both AVG and Norton on a computer, would there be any problems?

Dropped in to say that Grisoft have also been advised and asked if they will be protecting against this Trojan.
AVG has a TechSupport contact in the Program Help file.
If anyone has the time, it may be worth it to send them a similar request.
In tghe meantime, the info about the Trojan is at the link.
