'tis a good read! I read it the day it came out. Very interesting stuff for those into AMD or CPU architecture.
If your browser can't read unicode, you should probably switch! ;)

that was a long read but worth it.

"In SPEC CFP2000 the Alpha 21264A running at 667MHz can outperform our beloved AMD Athlon at over 2x the clock speed, not to mention that Intel's own Itanium only runs at 800MHz while providing even higher scores."

anyone know of any Itanium reviews? just interested in seeing how it actually performs.

I'll say this much, including the whole Northbridge (minus the AGP) INTO The CPU itself will GREATLY illeminate one major bottlenecks in motherboards!

No more will we have to worry about ALI Magic poor performing chipsets, or VIA northbridge performance problems, NOW it will ALL be on the CPU making it much faster and so much lower latency.

All mobo manufacturers have to include now is either an AGP chip and the Southbridge, OR just create one chip that has the southbridge plus AGP on it, so basically mobos will just have one chipset, no northbridge and southbridge cause the northbridge is in the cpu.

I think that's pretty awesome on AMD's part, must have taken a lot of work to get that to work.

Is that true?

I wouldn't be surprised if the new 64-bit processors could beat the pants off my T-bird, but can a 600mhz 64bit cpu really be that effective?

I'm assuming by the time they relase the hammer series

They'll ether be using pc3000 DDR ram or something like that or an entirely new type of highspeed/high quality ram. But then again I could be wrong, I'm also expecting videocards to reach current day CPU clockspeeds (I.e into the Ghz) along with alot of hardware goodies on board.

the hamme will use at least DDR333 since that is the fastest that there is right now..... I doubt there will be anything faster by the time of the hammer, btw that is PC2700 indicated 2.7GB/sec of bandwidth....

The two Hammer based processors we do know about that are codenamed SledgeHammer and ClawHammer (server and performance desktop respectively) should begin sampling in the second half of 2002.

sounds like they are only letting out a few

I'll wait it out untill 2002 third or fourth quarter. I hope amd will have enough time to work out all the kinks.
