In the hospital already for pneumonia, getting better, had a massive heart attack this morning.

I know where you are Bro. I lost2 Grandparents while I was living in Japan and though it really hurt emotionally, I simply could not get back to the States. I would have literally spent thousands.Humboldt wrote:Now my problem is...do I drop everything here (retail job at busiest time of year, 5 dogs, 2 parrots) to fly from CA to Pennsylvania for the funeral?
Really want to be there for my father but doing this for my grandmother's funeral 1 1/2 years ago almost wiped me out.

Only you can answer this. Be open with your family. No one can fault you for being open and honest.

I am so sorry
Grandparents are such special people, and what a magnificent life your Grandfather must have lived. Speak honestly with your Father and see how he is holding up as well...you will know the correct answer. Prayers for you and your family, that you will be strong for each other, and the grief pass as quickly as possible.

Feelings about religion: I believe in a dogma-free personal Prime Mover.

Humby, I'm sorry to hear of his passing, however, he lived a full life. I say do whatever you are comfortable with... He is gone and often it is best to remember them as you last saw him. We all grieve in our own way and if others can't accept that, then quite honestly they are selfish or at minimum, narrow minded...
As a side note, I believe that most airlines give a discounted rate if you are going to the funeral of a family member...
So...not going.
My family is ok with it. Dissapointed but they understand my reasons.
In hindsight I think it's better this way anyway. Instead of their driving from NC to Penn and having their car to pick me up at midnight the morning of the funeral, they're flying and won't have a car. And my aunt's hot water heater blew and won't be fixed by then so accommodations are kinda cramped.
Hi Ken
Looked into the bereavement tickets but it's kinda a scam...it's almost always a discount off their highest possible full fare.

Eh, it's hit or miss anymore. Airline service has really gone all to hell.
