The USS New York has arrived

Post by Joint Chiefs of Staff »

Don, thanks for the information!

USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? "Never Forget" :thumb:

Huh....hadn't read about that class before...had to go look it up. The hull design looks old...like pre-1950s. Unusual looking.

Yeah it is. I can picture a SEAL Team prepping for an OP somewhere off the coast of say...Iran. :D

The only bad thing about the ship is that every bloody terrorist organization in the world will want to sink it.

Nah, he's buried a few hundred feet in some cave in the mountains of Afghanistan after a 500 pound bunker buster took him by surprise.

A shame no one can verify this.

It is an amphibious war ship:

amphibious assault ship: a warship that embarks, transports, and lands elements of a landing force for expeditionary warfare missions. The United States Navy operates several of this type of ship; their helicopters, vertical take-off and landing aircraft, and air-cushion or conventional landing craft support of the United States Marine Corps's "vertical envelopment" assault doctrine. The ships are generally designed to transport troops into a war zone by sea, primarily using landing craft, although invariably they will also have a limited airborne capability.

then why call it an 'assault warship' if it's just a transport?

Ever see the back of amphibious war ships open up and release the amtracs (spelling) to shore? (land assault)

Oh don't you worry, that baby will not be traveling the seas alone without a few destroyers at her side, especially if they have an assault mission.

I often wonder if the voices in my head ever get frustrated because I'm just too damn lazy to climb that clock tower.
