I had Dapper installed a while ago, wiped it and replaced w/ Debian Etch. I just install the base system & build up w/ exactlt the apps I want, rather than all the Ubuntu bloat.

LOL.. bloat?
I have Dapper currently loaded on a old 10 Gig drive that I have in a USB External enclosure. I basically just uninstall the apps that I do not like, and install the ones that I do. :)

Yes, bloat! LOL.
I call stuff like this bloat:
Ubuntu Desktop (aka gnome-desktop) - not needed to us gnome
Totem packages
GStreamer stuff & other useless multimedia
open office (I just use abiword & gnumeric)
Evolution packages
Beagle
gnome-display-manager
games
update-manager, update-notifier

Don't get me wrong, ubuntu is great, but it's not really debian. It is a good desktop distro for those who just want to install linux & learn it.

Bah.. :p

Well I just upgraded online, and everything is running fine.
I think I am partial to this distro, because it is the first one that found my el-cheapo Wireless PCI card right from the start... no fooling around with ndiswrapper. :thumb:
A lot has changed since I loaded Red Hat 5.0

Looks cool Shinobs..........I'll have to slap it on my other lappy drive that has an earlier version of Ubuntu on it.

Haven't run it in a while.

Very nice.. maybe like TonyT said, it is more of a pain to have a lot of apps loaded fro the get-go.. but I really don't have a issue with "un-installing" the ones that I don't like..(well maybe just two apps.)

Yosc.. if you want to upgrade online, from with-in Ubuntu.. just do this..
Alt key and F2 key
then type this in the "run application" command bar.
gksu "update-manager -c -d" (with quotes)
Then choose to install Edgy Eft 6.10.

I prefer it that way, based on what I've glimpsed at their website, Ubuntu is designed to be a user-friendly distro aimed at people new to linux, an all in one package to get your feet wet in. As I barely piddle around in linux, nor really have a desire or need to roll up my sleeves and become a master at it...tis why Ubuntu works for me. I don't think it deserves to be picked on for being an entry level package.

wishing I had ubuntu lamp today...

I had to rebuild my home development server today. The trouble was that I needed apache 1.3, php4, mysql-server 4.xx, ssh, phpmyadmin, and that's almost impossible to today on debian etch or sid because of dependancy issues, so I ended up doing a very custom sarge install. I have tons of php scripts for my business database that work in php4-mysql3 but break in php5-mysql5. I do not want to rewrite the scripts! I also needed a desktop environment so I had to do a custom gnome install too, with all my dev packages and utils. Glad we had that extra hour today!

People are pretty loyal to their favorite distro.. there are a lot of people who say that their distro is the best one.
I like it not because it's easy, but because it has such a large support base, I've gone on their IRC channel, and got speedy help to my questions.
Eventually I'll run it as a FTP and Samba file server ( I miss not having a samba server), on another computer...
when I get around to it. :)

I like it... New kernel, works for dual core / multiple processors out of the box... It has a PAE-enabled kernel for rigs with 4GB[+] RAM... I only did a console install, no X-Windows so I can't comment on the GUI but it looks sweet from the screenshots as well. I'm thinking about running it on the next SG server (I just have to port some PHP/MySQL stuff coded for older versions).
