Pakistani man sentenced to blinding with acid
Associated Press

MULTAN, Pakistan -- A judge has ruled that a Pakistani man convicted of attacking his 17-year-old fiancee with acid be blinded with acid himself, police said today.

Mohammed Sajid, 19, poured acid on the face of his fiancee Rabia Bibi on June 24 in Bahawalpur, a city in the eastern Pakistani province of Punjab. His two brothers were also convicted of taking part.

The woman lost both eyes and her face was burned in the attack, which police said followed a minor dispute between the couple.

Judge Afzal Sharif ruled Thursday at a court in Bahawalpur that Sajid and his brothers were guilty of the attack and be jailed for seven years, and that Sajid be blinded by acid, said Rana Riaz, a local police official.

The judge ordered that a doctor perform the punishment publicly at a sports stadium.

"This is an Islamic way of doing justice," the judge wrote in his verdict.

Police said the defendant was likely to appeal his conviction and the sentence.

Violence against women, including acid attacks, are common in Pakistan, particularly in rural and deeply conservative tribal regions.

That is an eye for an eye mentality for you. I was just reading about Saudi Arabia and how the family of the victim can overrule a court in doling out punishment. If you kill someone, the victims family (adult males) takes a vote and if they choose to they can call off the execution.

Every normal man must be tempted at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
I often wonder if the voices in my head ever get frustrated because I'm just too damn lazy to climb that clock tower.

Mm... that's... harsh.

If they're sure it was him though that did the crime... I'd be lying if I said I thought he didn't deserve it.

Interesting to see how many approve of Sharia doctrines.
I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. And all in all and on the whole: some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.

Some states still partake in an eye for an eye mentality though. Anywhere where you have a death penalty is basically the same thing. I mean you can only get the death penality for killing someone right?

That's eye for an eye.

besides its not quite the same thing.. to get the death penalty you have to kill someone in an especially brutal or torturous way, kill someone during the commitment of a felony or kill more then one person. if i remember correctly all need to be premeditated too.

i wouldnt call this the same as an eye for an eye considering the extent of trauma that accompanies all of the previous compared to the quick and painless death of an exocution.

Its only quick and painless if you want to be humane...but then you get all tangled up in Ethics...well I guess we already are anyways.

As in the act of treason.... You had brought up US law as being eye for eye.

I was entertained by the number of people who approved of this aspect of Sharia.

I meant similar, but I worded my post poorly.

Besides isn't all if not most, including Canada's and America's, Modern day law ancestors Hammurabi s code. It was the first set of codied laws wasn't it? so it sets a presciendents (sp) for others to follow while they make changes along the way.

What has been updated is the modes of punishment, which is the crux of this thread.

heh, sorry I was editing my post while you posted.

what is so wrong about a punishment that suits the crime if you know for a fact that man is 100% guilty though.

It is a matter of opinion. Should righteous people stoop to the level of the criminal? Obvious, the punishment was not a sufficient deterrent.

I have often overheard rather denigrating viewpoints of Arabic culture, in particular its barbarism. I find the concordance with Sharia rather ironic.

that is very true.

Personally I really don't care which method ( Ours or Eye for an Eye style) is used as long as there is a suitible punishment, but some exetreme cases I find 25 to 50 years ( that is Canada's death penalty length I believe) a little too short.

anyways I'm off to bed now,

Hope everyone has a good night and Merry Christmas.
