How did you come up with your screen name?

Post by Cypher »

Ax asked me and it got me thinking. How have some of you come up with these names we use?
Here's how I chose mine
cypher=cipher:
[n] a message written in a secret code
[n] a secret method of writing
[n] a person of no influence
[n] a quantity of no importance; "it looked like nothing I had ever seen before"; "reduced to nil all the work we had done"; "we racked up a pathetic goose egg"; "it was all for naught"; "I didn't hear zilch about it"
[n] a mathematical element that when added to another number yields the same number
[v] make a mathematical calculation or computation
[v] convert ordinary language into code; "We should encode the message for security reasons"

_ which is a space or the presence of nothing.

138
Taken form the classic Misfits song we are 138, which explains it's meaning....

We are 138, We are 138, We are 138
We are 138, We are 138, We are 138
We are 138, We are 138
In the eyes of tiger

Do you think we're robot clean
Does this face look almost mean
Is it time to be an android not a man

The pleasantries are gone
We're stripped of all we were
In the eyes of tiger

We are 138, We are 138, We are 138
We are 138, We are 138, We are 138
8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8
8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8

I'll upload the song some other time. It sounds better than it reads if you like punk.

I was playing games. Any game really. They find that I always come back and beat them or that I'm very hard to kill. Hence, the name.

That and also my parents were not very careful and then tried to kill me. Sadly, I lived and had side effects from the drugs and torture but don't worry! I no longer eat children.

My original name here was IndyOST. Indy for Indianapolis, OST for Online Service Tech. I used that name when I was pretty much posting in the General Cable/DSL forum exclusively. Then I found the General Discussion board and decided to separate myself from work here on the boards and dropped the OST part.

well, my last name is acutally LANTZ

my first name is Jeremy

not everyone can say Jeremy correctly. and when I was a kid, there were a lot of Jeremys so my friends started calling me lance when we were in about third grade. Referring to my last name but not emphasizing the "TZ". It stuck through school. I joined the military when I was 17 (national guard with parental consent) and in the military more often than not it is mainly on a last name basis. Once again it fell back to the pronuonciation that it was when I was a kid. So, it still stuck. Same for college and everything else.

It is not too common I am called by my first name when I am not amoung family.

So, obviously I was extreemly fortunate that noone had taken the name yet on SG when I signed up.

Of course now I am considering changing the name to lance-tek since the domain lance (.com, .net. org) is already taken. And I didn't want to use one of the new extensions (ie. ".us") so I just registered lance-tek.com and If I do decide to join a sub-team for folding then that is when I will change my SG screen name (with admin permission of course)

So WOW, I am really doing some typing tonight.

yep, and I hate it when people mis-pronounce my name.

I was 16, working at Pizza Hut in Warsaw, IN. My Restaurant manager, BOB called me Germy. First time I ever went off on a boss. Let alone someone 2x my size. (Tony, you know I am not a big guy) well, from that point on he called me lance. So, did everyone else who was around at the time.

de pla•no

Pronunciation: (di plA'nO, dE, dA), [key] Chiefly Law.
1. without argument.
2. by manifest right; plainly.

I knew Humboldt would figure out I was on speedguide and I wanted something that would be sort of punny when he did figure it out. Too bad he never knew what De Plano means.

That and the fact that I figured in a way I was going to be stating stuff that was so obvious it did not need to be said, apparently other folks don't seem to think what I think is that obvious :D

from the latin phrase Respice Prospice (Ray-spic-ah Pro-spic-ah)

My grandfather was a latin professor and it was something he used to always say to me and my cousins when he was alive. It means: Look to the future, learn from the past.

At the time I joined SG, I was studying for my CCNA. I had wanted CiscoKid to beggine with, but it was taken so I used CiscoCert. About a year ago, I got it changed to CiscoKid since the original person hadn't been active in a couple years and only had a few posts.

Plus "Cisco Kid" by War is one of my favorite songs...dunno why, but it is...

Well, I picked my name because when i started my little computer tech service, I needed to find a name to throw on these wonderful business cards I had made. New Age Technology was teh first name that popped in my head. hence, nagetech (New Age Tech)

For my AIM (choco50000) I got it from that huge chicken in FF7 (chocobo) 50000 i think was my H/P at that point in the game.

:)

top that one!lol

anyone here name themselves after a FF7 character?

My full screen name is Cho Tanenashi but I find it pretty long so I like to shorten it to Cho.

During one of my breaks at College my friend and I were talking to two of our International student friends from Japan. They wanted to know how to insult people in english and we wanted to learn some insulting Japanese words. Cho Tanenashi is the first thing they told us and I thought it was a funny insult. They told me that Cho means very and Tanenashi means low sperm count, So together it means Very low sperm count. I decided it would make a good alias and a funny inside joke.
