differant pc#### in a dual channel setup??

Post by zooner »

I just bought a new mobo(ic7) and cpu(2.4c). I currently have a pc3000xms stick and was going to buy a second, when I realized I would be spending money i dont have. $103.

I found a seller that has a pc2700 samsung 512meg stick for under $50.

any problem mixing them up??

thanks

I understand i might be limiting my oc, but that's ok. With the multiple cpu/ram ratios available, I will have plenty of overhead.

Plus, I'm going with retail hsf. So, I wont reach the max on my cpu anyway.

from what i understand you are way much better going with 2 of the exact same sticks, of course YMMV.

u could go with the 2700 and just runn the 3000 at 2700, but i would just use the one stick and hold off on getting the other till i could afford it.

I think i would just send both the m/b and proc to my house and let me tend to its needs...i would hold off until i could afford a better stick imo.

well said everyone.

It is tough to spend another $100 on it though. I know I can picked up a dvd +rw for about $130-150.

I know the benchmarks will improve and my computer will be faster, yet I'd hate to spend the money and then sit back wondering why I bothered for the modest increase.

I can gain a very respectable overclock using it. In the applications that I general use my computer for, processor speed is more important then memory bandwidth. At least it's my assumption that video encoding and rendering is much more dependant on the cpu.

I hope to get into the special effects side of it soon, perhaps using hollywood fx. Then, i might see the need for more memory.

Let's rephrase. I love oc'ing. However, having only once computer now for the family means that stability means more. So, I'll push as far as she'll got and probably trim it back a good 5%-10%.

Another issue is dust, at least in my house. To maintain high oc'es, you need to be on top of dust. Working 6 days a week and going to school, I simply dont have the time i'd like to keep it all clean. While otd is good at keeping the house clean, she simply doesnt think to clean out the hsf. Since these processors clock down, it's very important to keep the max speed well within a comfortable range, even with a slight dust build-up.

wow. i'm tired. i've worked 20 some days striaght and the end really isnt too close.

I think i need to spend a little more time understanding exactly what DC is, beyond some benchmarks. I can then make a more intelligant decision what my next purchase will be.

anyone run a 800mhz setup with and without DC enabled????
