Fuji Finepix hangs my PC

I have a Fuji Finepix 2600Z which I've had for 6 months. Everything was fine to start with but now when I try to transfer my photos from the smartmedia to my hard drive, the pc completely locks up every time. I've tried reloading the USB drivers but that hasn't done any good, and the troubleshooting guide which came with the camera is no use at all. I'm starting to suspect it may a fault of the camera and so I've tried sending an email to Fuji, but have had zilch response.
Can anybody out there shed any light on this.

Try your camera on a different PC
If it works, that eliminates that.

You could try a memory card reader.
I use the Sandisk ImageMate SM/CF reader, and it works great

Definitely ditch the camera interface and get a card reader.
