load balancer

I want to setup a linux box or a win2k server box either or with 3 nics 1 with cable 1 with dsl and the other connected to a hub. I am basicalyy trying to make a load balancer like this 1 here

unless you are fluent in linux you are asking for a big headache. Win2k is too flaky in my opinion and is still slwoer than a dual wan router. Just break down and spend a few hundred dollars on a nexland dual wan soho router and call it a day.

It isn't possiable to load balance two different isp's broadband connection together. The only thing you can do with the two connections is have a reduntant connection to the internet. with providing your routes with 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 isp (gateway of isp1) and a backup 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 isp (gateway of isp2). If you want to load balance you will need two connections going to the same place plus the router on the other side has to bind the two connections together as for your router. In most cases people load balance with 2 T1 from a cisco router using 2 1CSUT1 wic cards and binding the wic cards together. The isp side has to do the excact same thing. Giving you 3mb bandwith connection.

THe ISB Pro800turbo will only give you the ability to share 2 broadband connections with internal clients, not increase the pipe. It give the internal clients a way out ether with one connection or the other. It picks which one is used less frequently. and sends that users packets out that way.

You're partially right...

The Pro 800 Turbo allows it to combine two home broadband conections like a DSL and a Cable line to be load balanced for much better throughput. The Turbo also automatically fails over from one connection to another should one go down.

The unit is VERY easy to setup and use with lots of features. It has a User Defined load balance setting based on percentage (default is 50% of load per line). So if you have a slower line, you can allocate only 20% of traffic to that line. The unit contantly checks each modem port to detect the status of the line. If one line goes down, 100% of the load is transfered to the good line. When the line comes back up, the user defined load balance setting is restored.

Note that load balancing doesn't mean that if you have two 1.5Mbps DSL lines connected that you'll download a single file at 3Mbps. It DOES mean that if you download two, three, four, or more MP3s at once, for example, you'll get the full use of both lines. Also, web browsing is noticibly quicker because web browsers open up multiple connections for each page you view (like multiple downloads at once). Note: Utilities like Download Accelerator that split a single ftp file into multiple downloads also work REALLY well with the turbo. One guy on the DSLreports forums was downloading a single file at 4.5Mbps by using Download Accelerator on his Turbo!

There is no other product like the Pro800turbo in it's price range. The next one up is a Cisco costing thousands of dollars and needing a BA to configure. Symantec liked this product so much, they chose it as the basis for their SMB VPN Gateway.
