I've been playing with setting up my Quake 3 Linux server.
The server is a Athlon TBird 900 MHz machine with 512 MB of ram running redHat 7.1.
I connect the Linux box to my 100Mbs cable modem router.
Currently I have a server config for 8 players. I've tried max_rates ranging from 3500-10000.
The ping shoots up & down from 50-999 constantly, some times the low pings last for an entire board, but not too often.
Does this sound like my service providers' problem, or mine?
What can I do to resolve this?
How do I get adelphia to give me more upstream bandwidth?
How to I test my upstream bandwidth?
I think if someone pays for two way service, they should get the same bandwidth for both directions!

go to one of the followin to test your speed.
http://nyc.speakeasy.net
http://lax.speakeasy.net
http://dfw.speakeasy.net
http://sea.speakeasy.net
http://chi.speakeasy.net
You may also wanna do some traceroues and pings to some sites so we can see if the problem is with a server inbetween you and the other players

THE XBOX WILL DOMINATE!!

Well, I ran the test on speakeasy.net.
I got a result of 3442(download)/79(upload) kbps
That translates to 420 Kbps/9.6 Kbps.
Is 9.6 Kbps too low to host a Quake 3 server?
At times the pings fall in line real well at about 50 or 60, but they jump to 999 pretty frequently.
I did the test about 5 times, never got the same result, and sometimes the results equalled a 56k modem!
Is this just traffic, or am I getting screwed by my service provider?
Here is the line of B.S. I got from Adelphia Powerlink support about my week upload bandwidth:
"In utilizing the Power Link Service, you agreed to comply with the terms
and conditions of the Service Agreement for Adelphia Residential Internet
Access Service. Use of the service indicates your agreement not to use the
Power Link Service or any Equipment or Software provided by Adelphia to run
a server of any type in connection with the Power Link Service, nor may you
provide network or host services to others via the Power Link Service.
Prohibited uses include, without limitation, running servers for PPP, FTP,
HTTP, DNS, POP, SMTP, NNTP, PROXY, DHCP, IRC, TELNET, TFTP, SNMP and
multi-user interactive forums, and remapping of ports for the purpose of
operating a server on the network. These ports are effectively blocked on
our network."
How much does a T1 cost per month? Is it available in residential areas? T3 sure sounds nice too!
