Pet owner poll

Post by Humboldt »

I help manage a 50 year-old pet store.

Our bread and butter comes from dog and cat food sales, plus whatever else is purchased when someone comes in for those items.

We have our dog and cat food separated, and grouped by brand.

Does it make more sense to you to have:

A) Dry food and corresponding brand wet foods next to each other

or

B) All Dry food grouped together and a different display of all canned food grouped together?

Always tweaking the store and just wanted your opinion.

Thanks

It does make sense to have it separated by species. Other than that, I would have all dry together, and all canned together, sorted by brand name or some other way that makes sense (popularity?).

My thinking is that even if it makes the customer walk a bit more between dry/canned food sections, it would expose them to different brands/sales that may make them try things, which may possibly give you a slight sales boost, if any.

Usually just buy our Pet Food at the Grocery Store (HEB or Walmart)

One of our Dogs is quite picky.
We buy the Kibbles 'n Bits.

The Cat doesn't seem to give a ****.... Even eats some of the Dog Food. But he still seems to like Cat Food. We buy the Store Brand. (whatever is cheap).
Anyway...We don't even have a Decent Local Pet Store anymore..(as far as I know)

To Contribute something useful to the Thread..
When we go to the store, we pretty much know what we're looking for already.

That's the thing, most pets and owners stick to something particular they're used to. In order for them to try and introduce something different, it would have to be close to their field of vision and enticing in some way, i.e. price/brand advertising, whatever.

Your whole population, generation eats Ken-L Ration because you're too poor to buy Alpo!!!! :rotfl: [//End of grade school reminitions] (Is Ken-L Ration even a dog food still?)

I seem to recall in grocery stores, dry dog food together, then can dog food together, same method for cats... I don't go to grocery stores very often, I usually make lists and ask people to go...

I do know that grocery stores spend major bucks on product placement research... This even includes best sellers (more expensive) at eye level, kids stuff lower and such...

Next time in store, walk slow and think about how they are set up. Stuff they want to move quick, end of aisles. Spontaneous sales by cash registers, and such... (maybe put some individual chew bones, toys by cash register... Don't forget to send me my commission!!!!!)

Good Luck!

Right?

But at least 25-30% of our customers have no clue.

And very few customers buy the same brand of dry/wet food. Most stick with the same dry food but are always trying new brands and flavors of cans.
