drivers missing, audio settings from either software installed or windows settings not set correctly. Speaker plug not put in right or in correct port. Speakers bad.. something not plugged in inside the computer to allow the port such as a front port on the computer not to work unless it's onboard sound it could be the audio card not seated properly.

Sava, I can get them on now but I have to put them full volume to hear what I use to hear on quarter volume. What would cause that? I hardly ever use speakers.

Check the mixer settings.. see some drivers come with software to change the volume levels outside of what Windows will allow. The plug may also not be in the slot all the way.

You probably have an intermittent cable. If it goes out again try changing that first and see if the problem is solved.
