Unable to access internet for VOIP (MagicJack)

Post by coltness »

For anyone not familiar with magicjack, it's a USB device that connects to any standard phone plug and gives unlimited service to most of North America for $20/yr.

I've tried installing it (just plug into the USB & wait for it to connect for the signup process) but immediately there's a message saying "magicjack cannot access the internet." This computer has never had any net access problems so I don't know what's wrong. Disabling the firewall/AV doesn't help.

Their chat-support recommended trying it on another system, so I did -- worked fine -- immediate connection. So now that I know it's not the device, I've got to find out what's preventing it from connecting on this computer. Any ideas?

When you plug in the USB device....does Windows see a USB device get plugged in, it should show up in the USB icon in the systray. Good USB port?

Yes, it shows up as Mass Storage Device Drives (H, G) and also as H & G in Win Explorer.
Kerio Personal Firewall 4. But I've tried it with the Firewall off.

Is this firewall installed on the computer you tried that it works on? If not then I would uninstall that firewall/reboot then try it again cause it may still be causing a issue even turned off.... otherwise just check things running on this comp vs the other.

OK, I have now tried it on another PC with the Kerio firewall and it works fine. I've always thought the USB transfers on this one were a little slow... Maybe there's something about the USBs.

Have you tried all the USB slots? Perhaps the set your trying is bad or unplugged from within the computer? Do you have other hardware plugged in and working on that computer using USB?

I haven't tried all of them, but I've tried the slot that's normally used by the mouse, and I know that all of them work with flash drives.

Update: It seems to be solved. On the MagicJack site they have a 7mb update. After installing it (not sure what it does), the thing suddenly requested net access and started working. So far, so good. Can't figure out why it would work on other computers without the update, but not this one. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Thats odd. This is the first time I've read this kind of issue from MJ.
