all ports blocked help needed!

Post by Slater2 »

G'day guys.

I've been registered for yonks, but cannot remember my password and the account is linked to my work email which I cannot access for reasons outlined below.

ok, here's the long winded approach so please bear with me:

Hardware:
D-Link G604T wireless ADSL2/2+ recently flashed to the latest firmware on a firewalled 512/64 connection. All settings are pretty much default.
decent PC (intel 6750) with 2gb ram and latest mobo bios.
wireless to the modem

s/ware: win XP with all the updates
office 2003 (outlook as email client)
firewall on
McAffee V11 - replaced with Kaspersky 7.0

Last weekend, all of a sudden I could not download emails. it would connect to the mail server no probs, but then lock at 25b (bytes) and would not download any further or gradually creep along at about 100bytes every 5 min or so.

I ran the network dianostic tool in (tools) IE7 as well as port detective and have found that all of my ports (25, 443, 21 and 80 although I can browse most web pages fine) appear to be blocked!

I cannot access secure sites (port 443) or download email (port 25), but I can send email no probs (port 110).
I cannot access my mail via webmail as it is a secure (port 443) site.

It says port 80 is blocked, but browsing is fine.

I run cute FTP for a wireless media player on ocasions and port 21 is blocked (Cute FTP is not running).

I've tried turning off all firewalls and virus scanners and even deleted McAffee and eventually replaced it with Kaspersky, but this did nothing other than waste my time.

I've tried outlook express and mozilla - no different.

My MTU is 1500 and I'm on PPPoA and all good according to the analyzer.

I've tried a clean boot (with nohting running at all) and it still does it.

Outlook has started in safe mode a few times and still cannot download emails.

It seems that if I re-start outlook a few times, all of a sudding it downloads the waiting emails.

here's the ipcpnfig /all copy

how do I extend that lease? it was set on 3600 seconds so I just pumped in all 9's - see how that goes..

It also has some trouble signing into eBay as it is a secure site, but if I stop the browser, then refresh, sometimes it brings the page up ok.

is there anything out there that can identify what is blocking your ports?

I've got a feeling this is a software bug somewhere on the PC

I've scanned the PC several times with different virus scanners (trend house call, Kaspersky (house call and trial version) , McAffee, CCleaner, AdAware 2007 and they have come up with nothing at all.

As you can all imagine, this has been quite a frustrating exercise and I'd appreciate all help on the matter.

thanks in advance!

I cannot access secure sites (port 443) or download email (port 25), but I can send email no probs (port 110).
Actually, port 25 is used for sending via SMTP and 110 is receiving email via POP3.

Also, you've made this increasingly difficult to try and diagnose by changing a bunch of your crap around when it just "all of a sudden" stopped working.

Try pinging a few different sites, report back on the results. Include any error messages you might encounter.

thanks for the reply cchooper.

The only 'crap' I changed was a firmware upgrade on the modem, the lease time and virus scanners.

it turned out that it was my ISPs fault and it has now been fixed.
