Firewall compatibility

Post by Dakota_37 »

I am wondering if a modem with firewall, router with firewall and a software firewall could create a conflict if running all at the same time. I have a ZyXEL Prestige 660 series modem, a Linksys WRT54G router and Zone Alarm all running at the same time. Could there be a conflict between the 2 hardware firewalls. Reason I ask is: When I go to grc.com and run a port test, it shows all ports as closed but not stealthed.

The Zyxel itself is a modem/router. It's the first device detected on your network. It may or may not have Ident port answering..which IMO isn't anything to lose a winks worth of sleep over anyways.

Curious why you also have a Linksys wireless router added to your Zyxel wireless router though..the Zyxel has the same NAT and wireless features already.

What version 660 do you have? You should be able to just connect a switch to it...most of the 660 models are already NAT routers that share the IP.

Having 2x NAT routers piggybacked isn't ideal, as you end up double-NAT'ing.

Not sure what version the 660 series modem is, as it is from Embarq (formally Sprint) which handles my DSL connection. I wanted to also be able to use a wireless laptop with the Linksys.

Oh and with a hardware firewall, get rid of ZoneCrap, if you really need a software firewall as well use the windows one or comodo: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
