Someone wanna take charge and point me to some FAQs on setting it up? Is it just a normal free "dedicated server download" like most games these days? Or do I have to see how the server survives that bloated Steam install?

Sub- they have just released the "classic" CS maps for now, but from what I understand, theres a whole new offical map-pack coming out shortly. For now there jsut trying to get the community over to the Source version.

I wouldn't mind getting in on an SG match, if only to get the feel for the game...I never really got into the whole Counter Strike scene...

wooohoooo!!!! lets do it!

Cat, I think you do need the steam client installed on the server, but there is still a text-based dedicated server app that you use, don't even need all the other junk in there. I haven't had any time to research yet, anyone else feel up to it?

would need to tinker around on the server here before i would want to try and admin. may try running it on my old system thats still sitting unused (needs case and juice). i just need to do some reading and get some console time in.

in the meantime, maybe a small private server for say 8 or 16ppls be acceptable? CS or HL Deathmatch would be cool by me. i'm easy that way :p .

just played a round of HL Deathmatch.... pure mayhem!

They go down a lot quicker if you hit them in the head. Ya know, avoid the Kevlar that's on their chest that you can buy in CS. :thumb:

Was planning on setting up a server to play on. I just got a 6mb connection installed at our office and I have a server that I had upgrade the firmware for all the SCSI drives, controllers and a quick mobo bios flash. I need to test it out for a while to make sure the arrays dont timeout anymore.

server specs
2 x 2.66 Xeon
Intel SE7501BR2 Serverboard
4GB Crucial Registered/ECC Memory
2 x 18 GB 15K cheetas RAID 1
3 x 36 GB 15K cheetas RAID 5
Adaptec 2200s RAID controller feeds each 18GB drive on each channel
Adaptec 2010s ZCR controller feeds to 36GB Drives
Intel Pro 1000 Server NIC
Will Work For FSB

I used to run a dedicated server (just plain counter-strike at the time -- and at one point, day of defeat) on Yoshi in the pre-STEAM days. Never got the Linux HLDS running once everything moved over to steam -- the support just wasn't there yet.

Now, are you planning on just using straight rcon to admin the server or are you going to use a server mod such as admin_mod or amx to help with that? Personally I'd recommend one of the mods, depending on what kind of features you're looking for. (PM me for details if you'd like, or just reply here.)

As far as your maxplayers setting goes, I think 16 players would be more acceptable. 4 on 4 is kinda small. Most leagues do 5v5 for matches, and most pubs have their maxplayers set anywhere between 16 (20 is common) and 32 (not so common) players. I mean, the maps aren't "Battlefield" big, but I'm not so sure 8 people could really fill most of the maps (though to be honest -- I haven't played any of the CS:S maps.)

And of course you'll also want to figure out what kind of features/annoyances you want (if any) such as stats (maybe) and/or one of those cheesy RPG mods (definitely not.)

Anyways, just my .02, with a little something extra.

not sure if admin_mod or stats_mod or any of thos 3rd party mods have been built for CD: Source yet.

The maps are all pretty much the same maps as the old CSmaps, just updated (thye look really nice BTW)
