Laptop question..

Hey all, how would I go about transfering files from one laptop to another? I know how to do it with desktops, but with laptops? Is there a certain adapter or cable to get and any ideas what it is called and how much?? Thanks.

Laptops are no different than desktops other than the portability. If connecting them directly use a rollover ethernet cable ($10). As far a configuring them for file transfer, it's the same as you would do it on a desktop.

Your kidding right! $10 for a crossover cable? Damn I can make those puppies up in under a 2 minutes. I should do a bunch and sell them at a flea market for $3 a pop.

You talking about, say with desktops you would "slave" the hard drive from "source" computer, copy them over in Windows Explorer? Often use this when the source computer is not bootable.

Yes, there are IDE adapters out there for laptops, which you attatch the "source" hard drive to, and the adapter plugs into the PCMCIA slot on the laptop.

Also there are USB drive adapters which would do the same thing....take the "source" drive, connect it to the USB drive cage, plug it into the destination computer...and you're all set.

Apricorn makes a lot of those kits.

Yes rollover/crossover cable.

One end is terminated 568A, the other end is terminated 568B.

Crossover for similar devices
Straight through for dis-similar devices
Rollover for Cisco Router console ports

Just a ball park figure. Sure they are easy to make but I have no idea if he has the crimpers or the knowledge.
