Military man...
Military man...
I was out walking a few minutes ago and as I pass one of the other apartment complex's secondary exits I see a guy in fatigues holding a baby and his wife putting things in their car...something about the way she was moving and the way he was holding the baby made it obvious he was leaving, so I broke out of my walk and went up to him.
I apologized for interrupting, and asked if he was being deployed to Iraq. He said yes, and I stuck out my hand to shake his and I thanked him for his service. When I did that, his wife ran over to me and hugged me tightly, and all I could do was hug back and reach over and shake his hand again.

I’m thinking that if you went out naked people would still come up to you and thank you like at gas stations or dunkin Ds or whatever. I know I would come over and thank you. Might even take a few pictures and see if you’d like to go for a drink somewhere.Meggie wrote:it seems like everytime i go out in BDUs people come up and thank me at like the gas station or dunkin Ds or whatever.

People will forget what you said... and people will forget what you did... but people will never forget how you made them feel.
Burke you rock that was awesome!!!!!!Meggie wrote:it seems like everytime i go out in BDUs people come up and thank me at like the gas station or dunkin Ds or whatever. I usually feel kinda bad because i come home at the end of the weekend.

That was a very nice gesture and I'm sure they will never forget your act of random kindness. I know I won't.
I get thanked quite a bit as well and it's such a nioce feeling knowing that people care enough to do so.

I sat there a little puzzled for a minute as I was within a block of State HQ and the 38th Infantry Division HQ (seemed he would be used to seeing us in uniform every day?) then I got into my car (the POS that it is) and drove off. I will never forget that day ... it gave me a warm fuzzy

I'll never forget the time 11 years ago I went to the VA medical center in Danville, Illinois for an appointment and med refills.
A much older man in his 70's approached me outside and said thank you for your service. I said how did you know I was a veteran. He said you wouldn't be here if you weren't. I then ask him what he was doing here. He pulled up his pants leg to the top of his sock. He had no leg, just an artificial one. Told me he lost it just 2 weeks after D-Day in Belgium while on a night patrol. I thanked him for his service to our country.

Now if you apply this to your everyday life....saying hi to a stranger....the world would proabaly be a better place.

I kinda hesitated posting this because I didn't want to seem like I was tooting my own horn...frankly, I almost didn't divert from walking...but something in the way the whole "scene" looked just compelled me to talk to him. I'm glad I did, though.
In the morning I'm going to call my brother and thank him, too (he was in the Marines 1995-2002 and was part of HMX-1 security after 9/11)...
