Recommend a reliable router

I have a very old router. A discontinued SMC 7004BR.

It works ok except I have a problem that I keep losing the connection that forces me to keep rebooting it. This problem has been occuring with my old ISP (cable) and even my current ISP (dsl). So I think it is the router that is causing the problem.

I looking around and thought the Netgear RP614 was good but saw the review in here and one of the problems was also it would lose connection over time.

So can anyone recommend a good reliable router?

All I need is 4 port router and not wireless (not planning on switching to wireless)

Personally I would say stay away from NetGear and DLink router. If you are looking to buy a router from a retail store I would have to say go with the Linksys 4-Port router $49.99. Some people may disagree with me on this but Linksys has been doing alot better lately with their current firmware. For general home user, it's fine. Speaking of firmware though, does your SMC have the latest firmware before it was diccontinued?

Of the common home market routers...I like the Linksys BEFSX41 model. Note the "X" in the model name...not the old style BEFSR41. I much prefer the SX model...more features.

Linksys combines average performance with great compatibility, easy admin, lots of features....and since they're so inexpensive...if they croak, easy to simply run out and buy a new one.

Nexland ISB SOHO. Terrific router. Been using it for more than a year and I love it!

Actually the SMC7004 is one of the most reliable Wired Router. With the last firmware it even has excellent Firewall enhancement.

Try a Temp Router (i.e. borrow from a friend or buy an easy returnable), to make sure it is a Router problem.

Hopefully your setting (PPPOE and keep alive are set correctly).

Microcenter has a Router for $9.99 after rebate it probably just as good as any other wired Router.

4 Port Cable/DSL Gateway Router.

You won't find those thins around anymore.... Symantec baught them out a while go and dropped Nexland's product line.

Do you mean that they sell the same routers under different model numbers/names, or they totally scrapped the models altogether? It is a shame because Nexland made really good routers.

Symantec has been reselling the Pro 800 series routers for some time under their own name...with a couple of added features. Those are the only routers that are still being sold...the model 100, 200, and 200r.

I'm sure on eBay you could snag some ISB SOHO's cheap.

Bummer Symantec didn't continue the entire product line...their (Nexland's) routers were blazingly fast.

I got a US robotics I used for about 3 years I thought was good..............If you want it I will make a deal with you......I went wireless and dont use it anymore

Im running a 4 port linksys, but I think its the BEFSX41 that TeOldStoneCat mentioned. Ive never had any problems out of it. Its easy to manage, been very reliable and has done everything I need it to do. The built-in firewall is nice, and fairly easy to use. I havent had any problem with DHCP either.
