favorite dl manager?

Post by De Plano »

So what are peoples favorite dl managers?

I had Get Right, after reformatting my h.d. I have not replaced it yet. Before I did that I wanted to find out whether anyone one had some new and wonderful down load manager that I should know about.

If it is free that gets extra points in my book ;)

Suggestions?

I am trying to get it but the site is down.
I am on 56k so I don't think it will be that drastic of a speed up. I am always willing to try something that will make it faster though.
Thanks Mnosteele.

imho...the best one out is Star Downloader. It's free, no adware, no spyware, and totally free. Plus, it does a great job.

http://www.stardownloader.com/

If you need help in setting it up...contact me. Also, it integrates with all 3 major browsers...IE, Opera, and Netscape/Mozilla. ;)

Same here with dialup.

About the only benefit from managers from what I've heard is the 'Resume' capability if you lose your connection. Many ISP's here have a timed session limit of 4 hours and then they boot you off so then it would be good to have. My ISP lifted that session limit.
Multiple site d/loading using one doesn't seem to be any quicker.

I haven't used one for a while now and d/load speed usually sits at 5.0 to 5.9kb/sec.

JMHO. :D

Yeah Croc the resume feature is a must for 56K users, the speed might not increase much if at all, but it also scans everything for virii when done. Also allot of them (I know Flashget has it) allow you to set it up to dialup and download a file and close on a schedule like in the middle of the night when you aren't using your connection.

same with Star Downloader. It also allows you to scan for virii using your AV program.

FlashGet and Star... are either of them configurable to only come up when you want them, not automatically, every time you d/load?

My experience is with Star so that is what I will speak of.

You can choose to integrate Star with your browser...this will intercept all downloads unless you click on a link while holding down the Alt key. The Alt key bypasses Star.

You can also choose to monitor URL's in the clipboard. So you can copy a link and Star will intercept. You do not have to integrate Star into the browser for this feature to work.

You also can choose none of these options and just launch Star on your own and copy/paste a link into the URL window.

:D

So yes...it is possible.

Hi DePlano

Here is another that is very good imho " Download Express "

Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP program

Download Express - FREE!
Version 1.3 Build 119 Release

Download Express 1.4 Beta 1 is available!

Click here to see Download Express Concise Manual

MetaProducts Download Express (DE) is a Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP program that allows you to download individual files from the Web and FTP sites at the maximum possible speed. Multiple downloading channels technology significantly decreases the time necessary to download files. Download Express is a small (about 260 Kb) Browser plugin application. Currently it supports Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher. By default, Download Express intercepts all clicks on files with extentions: 123, ARJ, CAB, CDW, COM, DOC, EXE, JAR, LHA, MP2, MP3, MPE, MPEG, MPG, PDF, PPT, RAR, RTF, TAR, XLS and ZIP. Download Express has the auto-learn feature. It will ask you about including filename extentions when you add files with a new extention using browser click hot keys. When you cancel, Download Express opens a file window for unwanted file types and asks if you want to exclude this extention from its file types list.

Browser clicks monitoring hot keys:
- Please hold Alt+Control keys down when clicking to add any link to Download Express;
- Please hold Shift key down when clicking to have Download Express ignore a link

Star Downloader is also good & with it you can date your DLs automatically as well. I used it prior to Download Express.

I think i will try the FlashGet mentioned as well. some suit a situation better than others.

Wow Thanks for the input everyone!
I had some drivers that were 7Mb and wound up just grabbing GetRight. Soon as it starts getting too persistent with the nag wear I'll try these others.
So far the biggest problem with GetRight is that I have not set it up adequetly. It keeps trying to dl web pages, which is annoying.
At least next time it happens I can just change the settings. If I can not figure it out I will just try one of the suggested ones.

Thanks again!
