Lock up, get deadbolts on all outside doors that have removable thumb latches.
I didn't once say "hurrr..I've got a big gun, lookit the size of my weewee! It must be huge to handle a gun this."
I said, that if someone was in my house, and I felt threatened I'd ventilate them. Draw your own conclusions, but I'm not gonna pop out of a closet pistols blazing and then make some witty one liner. It'll be more like "********* IN MY HOUSE, GET OUT. I HAVE A SHOTGUN AND I'M A GOOD SHOT. LEAVE NOW AND YOU'LL BE FINE." If said trespasser decides to scoot I'll call 911 and report a break in and be done with it. If said moron makes any move other than for the door....mince-meat will ensue. Pretty much defines my thoughts on the situation. I would be justified and acting rationally. My person is more important than anything else in the world TO ME. Besides the sound of a shotgun pump action will make most people think twice anyway.

Agreed with everything there.....
The shotgun.....it does leave a huge mess though..
The way i look at it is, if someone is in my house "I" am fearful for my life and that of my wife. And when the cops got there I had him between me and the door, he could have left. I said "get out of my house or i will shoot" he said "f you im gonna kill you" and i shot him in the forehead. also before that he managed to get in my kitchen and grab a big chef's knife....see its in his hand....actually two knives just in case he was a lefty then i have that coverd too.....

Yea, I dont see how protecting your family and/or showing friends your rifle when they ask for a pic has anything to do with your genitals...but I guess some people think it does.
some people are extemely close minded about guns. I find it funny tho that 9 times out of 10 these are the ones asking others to be open minded to gay marriage/ abortion and such. If half of these people had ever been to a professionaly run shooting range they would realize how save and fun shooting can be. i read somewhere that shooting is one of the safest "sports" you can do.
Yet all they see is some idiot on the news who greased his whole family with a pistol, and it was the guns fault mind you! The same idiot who woulda used a knife or a baseball bat if he had to.....
Oh well...

My biggest complaint with this post is calling shooting a sport! lol
If you have a gun and are trained to use it for defense then yes it can be a great help, but even without one, someone should not be able to "gain entry" into the house. The gun should be a backup plan or worst case senario solution.

We are not talking about shooting ranges. We are talking about the responses to the thread originator. I've been to shooting ranges myself with my brother.
You don't shoot people at a shooting range.
If all you guys do is warn the perp about a gun and the perp takes off, that is fine. That is not what was posted earlier in the thread.
We are talking about shooting someone.
Like I said, I serious suggest gun owners to research and know all of the loopholes in your locality regarding shooting someone who attempts to break in your home.

Yes, there are some states that even if the perp HAS a gun and shoots at you, if you shoot him back you goto jail. Thats about the lamest thing in the world, but its true. It does make me wanna move to Texas so I could at least defend my family/home without worrying about some lame loophole.

I'm curious, Wee, what state can you not shoot someone in self defense?
Dude, this is a no brainer. If the police wont stake out the place, I would. They probally just dont have the manpower. Send the wife and kids away for a night or so. Sit and wait for them in the dark, on the sofa. If you think they (he) has been in the house, and your not missing anything now....they'll be back. A sign on the door with "Never mind the dog, beware of the Owner" or Trespassers will shot, survivors will be shot again" might work, but....
My rule, you break into my house (while Im home) ...good luck getting out. And I mean it. I would not take pleasure in ending someones life, but a line has to be drawn for the safety of my family. What if its another BTK? Or a Manson, or just some crackhead thief for that matter. The SOB would be dead, D E A D.
As far as the "law", who gives a damn. I would rather take my chances in the court, than have my family injured, raped or killed. And I guarantee there will only be one side of the story, because he (they) won't be at the court appearance. I would gladly give my life (in jail) for the protection of my family.

ive shot more weapons, and more often then a lot of the people here. Because of this, i have more respect about using them and dont get my jollies off by talking about how awsome i would be by unloading into some guy outside my house.

You should NEVER point a gun at someone to scare them. If you point a gun at someone you better be prepared to kill them. That is one of the first things that anyone should be taught about firearms. Never point a gun at somone unless you are preparing to end their life. if you have a gun and aren't willing to use it, or are just using it to scare someone you are probobly gonna be the one who ends up dead....

Firearm saftey 101. Don't aim a weapon loaded or not at anything you do not intend to shoot.

Agreed that door locks and keeping people out is your first line of defense, but someone who is willing to break in and come back is someone who is willing to break windows and such...
Also anyone not willing to call shooting a sport is someone who probobly can't hit the broad side of a barn!!! There is TONS of skill and practice involved. Person versus person.....sounds like a sport to me!

I wouldn't necessarily call war or hunting your enemy a sport but...
Target shooting, either at paper targets or trap ect ect would be considered a sport.

In VA even if an armed perp is in your house, you need to make every effort to escape rather than shoot. If your path to the back door is not blocked, you have a lot of explaining to do.
Someone posted something about a hot gun - serials wiped - that'll get you 5 years w/o probation regardless of circumstances under which you use it.
anything is possible - nothing is free

If the perp lives to tell his side..then maybe...but man I find it hard to belive you'd find a jury to hang someone for protecting themselves.
Agreed about the wiped serial numbers. In fact I would think that would be a federal thing..
RoscoPColtrane wrote:heck no, if you are going home defense with a pistol get a revolver. Like a .357 mag or something.
For what though? Glock is concealable, can be carried with me easily, and has great stopping power. The .40 or .45 will be a bigger bullet than the .357.

yeah but for HOME defense you might not be thinking clearly, and with the revolver you point and shoot. Don't have to worry about if there is one in the chamber, if the safety is on (non glock i know). What are you gonna be concealing it for for home defense?

I know somebody has already mentiond motion activated lights, but do it on a LARGE scale. put lights ALL around your house, every window and every door. if one is tripped, the entire house lights up. that would be cool!
