Do you know why it didn't work with the first settings you provided?

After you changed those last couple settings 2 days ago, it has been working great. I didn't have any problems online and I watched a movie online last night through hulu.com with no problems. Now I was just watching another movie and got about 1 hour 20 minutes through it and I lost my connection again.

It seems like I was having the same problem that I had last time. I tried clicking repair and letting it reset, but still had no internet. I shut down the computer and restarted the dsl modem. Then I started the computer and it's working again.

Is there something more aggressive about these settings that would make me lose my connection or do you think this had nothing to do with the last problem since it was fixed after restarting the modem?

I also got two errors when running the test. I think it said something about an invalid file. Is that important? Is there a log that keeps the errors? I can run it again and copy them if you want.

A couple of those sound kind of weird. The ones one the top with go.microsoft.com/fwlink. I remember I had a problem with IE opening and going to that website and I couldn't fix it no matter what I tried, so I went in the registry and manually changed my homepage.

Also O18 - Filter hijack.

I'm a newb with hijackthis. I just downloaded it for the first time. Do you just want me to go through and manually delete all the entries with "no name" or "no file"?

These?

O2 - BHO: Browser Helper Object - {AFD4AD01-58C1-47DB-A404-FBE00A6C5486} - C:\Program Files\Common\helper.dll (file missing)

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jp2iexp.dll

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - C:\WINDOWS\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe
I think this is a valid windows file. Should I delete it?

O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {53d64cdc-6802-4d9b-90ba-86b1192c4f4a} - (no file)

I have no idea how I would show them this. I can talk to them online, but i'm not sure if the person on the other end would know what to do with it.

Do you think it is a problem? I have no other problems online except for what has already been fixed and when I just lost my connection that one time. It has not happened since then.

Bad pings at hop 3 and 7. Could be due to bad weather in some parts of the US and network signals are being rerouted and causing congestions in other parts.

Another thing, cables need replacing !

I don't think its bad weather since it always looks like that. And what about the rest of them? Its not just 3 and 7. I stopped there b/c it takes a while and I didn't feel like waiting.

I dropped the time out time down to 200ms and that makes it much faster. They all time out except the last one.

I tried to reply like 4 hours ago, but I lost my internet again when I was trying to reply. This time I couldn't connect on the other computer or with an ethernet cable. I left it unplugged for a couple hours and then used the reset button on the bottom. I think my modem might be going bad. This is the third one i've had in 4 years.

I'm not sure if your asking if I am using a firewall from AVG or if I am running a separate firewall.

I am just using the free version of AVG antivirus. I also have the windows firewall enabled and there is a built in firewall in my modem and also in the wireless router. I don't think I have ever changed any of the settings though. They should be at default.

It is the firewall on my modem that is doing it. Tracert still works with windows and wireless firewalls on. When I turned the firewall on my modem to low tracert stopped working again.

Should I leave the firewall on and only turn it off when I need to run tracert or do you think it is causing problems with my internet?

I belive the unstable connection caused by old modem !

Do they useually go bad? I've had 2 speedstream 5200 modems in the past that each lasted about a year. When they burned out, the power light lit up red.

The last time they brought a different one. Its a Siemens Gigaset SE567. Thats what i'm using now. When the guy from my ISP brought it, he said it was brand new so they didn't know what was going to happen with it. Like if it would have problems or how long it would last.

The area I live in has a lot of power outages and sometimes before it goes out there will be partial power or it will go on and off real fast a few times before it shuts off. That is probably why one of our tv's burned out.

Now i've probably had this modem around a year and I wouldn't be suprised if it went soon. The problem is that there not going to do anything about it unless it completely dies. Is it common for them to burn out?
