@HOME UNCAPPED!?!?!

just to add here.

I went 2 days ago to the mall and the Rogers@home (wich is what I have here in Canada) had a booth with like 4 PC's with @home service well I went and I took a quick peak at the registry I wanted to see if they were tweaking in order to get costumers to buy, well I found nothing but just the default settings in the registry so I went to DSLReports on it and ran a Speed test and guess what it gave me 1900kbps for download and 98kbps for upload, so first of all I was impressed no tweaks and that DL time wow, but then again my UPload is 200 - 260kbps, so I didn't care much for that, but I decided to ask the guy that was working there, I said, What is the service capped at?, at least for upload, because I have friends in the US that know they are capped, well needles to say he told me that here in canada we are not capped because Rogers@Home has not found a reason to cap us, well I just smiled an knod, you expect me to beleive that, when at work we have a T1 and thousand of computers running on that same T1 so the bandwith is not what it should be and I just change the RWIN and turn on scalling and I get 1200kbps d/l and 1800kbps upload, now that is not capped *lol*, anyways, he told me that usually that was the speed for upload, what I got there in the test and I told him not really I get over 200k and he said and your still complaining *lol*.

Well the point is, what a lier! I know we are capped at the upload cuz no matter how fast I get my Dloads the uploads do not increas. And if you were to send info back and forth from the same computer I beleive that it should be almost at the same speed well there should be a difference but not by that much!.

I have two cable modems. Going to install them in 2 hours, after work

Is there a way to add both 16k/sec to get 32k/sec? Anything else cool I should try with 2 cable modems?

I have a Samsung Info Ranger SCM-100R Cable Modem. I used to get 16Kilobytes on my uploads, but a few months ago I started getting 50 Kilobytes or so per second. Now they still say they're upload is 12 Kilobytes when I call them so it's gotta be something with they're service.
I live in Windsor, Ontario and have Cogeco @Home.

You wouldn't happen to be in Maastricht as well? Or somewhere in my area? Because it's the only area that I know of that @home serves. BTW: I have the same cable modem and upload cap. Nothing I've tried has raised it so far, and I've tried a lot of stuff.

upstream is capped at 128 -- downstream is not capped -- that relys on your node and signal -- some areas don't have the upstream cap yet but it is coming just about everywhere -- all accounts no matter the type of modem are capped -- it says right on the equipment info sheet -- if they missed your friend than he is lucky but it is set that way during install at the main office -- local and the customer service reps have no control over it -- psy

don't you people think that maybe @home lies when they say that it is software and has nothing to do with the modem? of course they lie.if they said,oh if you get a different modem you'll be uncapped and get up to 200KB/sec upload.everybody would be using up the bandwidth so they give you the capped modem when you order it and don't tell you about the other modems out there.DOCSIS modems are the uncapped modems out there right now,and @home doesnt tell you about them until they get them capped.read around about people who switched modems and get different speeds,some has to do with software but mostly it lies within the modem.another reason why i believe its in the modem is because @home supplies the motorola,a non-DOCSIS modem and when you want the new toshiba which is DOCSIS,they say we cant supply them in your area and they only have them in certain areas for now and they say they don't support it yet in your area.why dont they support it? because they know its an uncapped modem and the areas they DO support it,it IS capped and they need to cap the new toshibas in the other areas it isn't available and they figure if they tell you they don't support that modem that you wont bother even trying to get it when they KNOW it will work but you will have awesome upload speeds and take up all the bandwidth.thats a theory of mine which me and my friends believe to be true.think about it....

The reason that DOCSIS modems are not universally available is that they require a different CMTS at the headend to talk to the modems. Beyond that, DOCSIS modems are in short supply due to demand. Capping is an inherent part of the system, not something that gets added on.

You should consider the possibility that it isn't the ISP that is lying - maybe some of the speed reports are wrong. I sam a guy yesterday claiming 30 megabits!

To convert megabits to kilobytes, multiply by 125.

According to @Home I do NOT have a download cap in Great Falls, Montana. I chatted with them yesterday and the guy told me I have no download cap and that download speeds depend on the different servers, but the only time I get "decent" download speeds is when I use Download Accelerator Plus. Without DAP, I only get about 40-50 kbps no matter where I download from. Any ideas here? I have applied all patches.

The Motorola Surfboard 3100 is DOCSIS. It used to be the General Instruments model, but Moto bought them.

the speed reports may be wrong but thats not what i go by for my upload speeds.when i upload to FTPs or send files through AIM with another friend with @home the most is go is what i said,16KB/sec.i honestly think @home are not telling the whole truth about how DOCSIS modems get better upload speeds and they dont want us to take up the bandwidth.

I beleive the Motorola SurfBoard Cable modems are DOCSIS-ready modems. at least the SB3100, SB3100i and SB3100D models.

The SB3100 cable modem is hardware-ready to support the DOCSIS 1.1 specification standard.

This is because Cogeco @Home has released the caps on the upload (or at least increased them). Cox @home did the same thing a while back.

If your friend gets those kinds of speeds, he's lucky. Normal upload caps are from 12K - 50K/sec Switching from Motorola to DOCSIS won't change anything.. his node must not be capped off.

Call your tech support line and request a truck roll for a signal check or modem swap. Cable lines could be faulty. Singal to the modem could be too low/high. It also depends where you are downloading from.. try a local, fast server that should give you top speeds in measuring what type of downloads you can actually achieve.

I have comcast@home in Elk Grove, CA. I also have the new tosiba modem and my upload is capped at 128k. It has to do with your area and if it is capped or not.....I don't think its the modem.

i believe it has to do with the area AND modem,docsis,according to @home,is not supported here in my area yet but my friend has it and @home says its not supported because they know its uncapped if they use the docsis modem,so thats what i think it is,i think its the modem and the fact its not supported here yet in my area.hey oakfan,im assuming it means oakland fan,fan of what,the A's or Raiders? im a huge fan of the raiders,can't wait for tomorrow's playoff game.

What can we do? I usually upload @ around 40k/s. Downlading ranges from whatever my lowest one is to about 400/k to 500/k. I have a suggestion you guys. For those people who download a lot of stuff off internet sites, download. www.downloadaccelerator.com and make sure you set it so you can download from 7 different mirrors at once. It works for most of the sites with mirrors and MAN it REALLY WORKS. I tested it. I downloaded with IE explorer with a certain amout of speed and with downloadaccelerator...I was flying past my IE download.

Anyways, what can I say? I'm not happy with the @home service but what can we do? Cancel and go back to dial-up? hmmm...I don't think I would. Or go for bell... downloads I heard are very fast but uploads ARE ALL CAPPED 2 16k. I've been downloading off the @home newsgroup (my main newsgroup server) 5/k a second. I don't think that's very funny. I use a router and they say that's wha slows me down. I hook up my cable modem directly to my computer and I get the same speeds. Today I downloaded some attachments off the newsgroup... 100k...and then just now.. 5k/ what is going on here???

*sigh* we ask for too much. What about other people in the third world countries as you must have heard many people say?... ah well...*sigh* again. That's life...

I have cox@home in Oklahoma and have no download cap and upload is 256KB/s I have noticed that when I files share on IRC its slow to moderate depending on what the other person is connected with cable/dsl when I download of HTTP it varies depending on location and time when I file share off FTP its fast and can almost always reach my upload cap of 256KB/s and download upwards of 3Mb/s.plus depending on where the ftp server is and time, late at night is always fastest. I have file shared with AIM ICQ and MSN and they are worse then when I use IRC. What I guess I am trying to say is it isn't always the modem or the isp that determines your speed in so much as the medium in which you are sharing files with.

its the modem because i used to have a lancity modem i got 700k d/l speeds and 128k u/l speeds and 20-70ping in games, now they ave me this peice of crap sb3100 i get 250 d/l speeds 16k u/l and 200+ping in games!

Hey I live in Elk-Grove and I have the RCA 215 and I am not Capped. People Always upload from me on Naspter and it is not uncommon for me to see upload speeds of well over 120KBS That Kilobytes.

I forgot to add that I think that is unfair to people who are capped when people just a few houses down are not. If @home caps people then they should find a way to cap everone in that area and not just some people. How come I am not capped when that other guy is. We both have Docsis Modems? I have the RCA 215 and has the Toshiba.
