Post by cyberdude »

need help improving my download speeds as there very slow

athlon 1200
386 mb ra
broadband 1 mb connection

2002-08-06 17:22:23 EST: 371 / 247
Your download speed : 371174 bps, or 371 kbps.
A 45.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 247831 bps, or 247 kbps.

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 65535
Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 47 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

OK great, download the TCPOptimizer (in my signature) and try the following settings:

Settings tab:

select - cable modem
check - custom settings
network adapter selection - your NIC
check modify all adapters
maxmtu - 1500
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 32120 or 37960 or 52560 or 64240
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options - uncheck both boxes*
(* if using TCP Receive Window of 65535 or higher check windows scaling)

Other Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 20
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 40
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

Also read the link in my signature Help & Tips and try my other suggestions.

:) :D

Great, also make sure you try the other things I suggested. Your speed is pretty far off so I really don't think it's your settings. Power cycle your modem, NIC duplex mode, no proxy etc. :)

You need this patch if Receive window is above 65535:
