Personally I dont like AMD chips very much, they have been "quirkey" in my experince. But sounds like a good rig, just make sure you get a full tower and plenty of fan space. Hell I would even consider drilling a hold in th side and adding one there if you can. Mine was overheating alot for some reason, so I took it out of the cabnet (the fans were in the back not the side then) and made more fan plugs....now everythings peachy!

Hey Mutch,
No problem. Yes, the price was American.
As Aagiants said, you really don't need a box like that... An aweful lot of money for something that will be "outdated" by technology in a few months...
We are on the brink of some great tech break throughs such as Serial ATA, the Sledgehammer AMD, etc... A system that was top of the line 6 months ago can do everything that you will need it too and not cause your family financial hardships... And you can always upgrade later!!!
For less than $1000, maybe say $600, you can have a box to be proud of!
I know about the higher end stufferz, and these guys know much more than I about the practical stufferz, so let's let them give you some ideas!
Why don't you run a thread and ask for help designing a functional puter for University and lets see what they come up with!
Ken

Plenty of decent priced systems out there for what you need and still plenty of power
If buying now these are the parts I'd go with
I'll list Intel system first then AMD
Intel Platform:
Case: Any case will work, you don't need an expensive one, get a mid tower ATX case that is compatible with P4 (requires different mounting holes on the mobo tray)
Power Supply: Enermax 350w
Mobo: MSI 845G MAX (supports 533fsb P4's and has integrated sound, video and ethernet and uses DDR). Or if you want REAL power Asus P4T533 but it uses 32bit RAMBUS.
CPU: P4 1.8Ghz has a LOT of oc'ing potential
RAM: 512MB Corsair XMS
Video Card: If gaming is not your thing stick to the Integrated video, if it is get a Radeon 8500 128MB card for right now, or wait for Radeon 9700 though it will be expensive.
Sound: Mobo has that Integrated
Ethernet: Integrated
Hard Drive: Depends how big and what you need, the WD 80GB Special Edition drives are piced WELL now.
DVD-ROM: SKip the CDROM get a 16X Lite-on DVD ROM
CDRW: Lite-On 40X CDRW
All this can be had for a GREAT price and is plenty powerfull
AMD Side:
Case: Any case will work, you don't need an expensive one, get a mid tower ATX case.
PSU: Enermax 350w
Mobo: Any KT333 based, or whatever chipset you prefer some have Integrated ethernet and audio so look for those.
CPU: AXP 1800+
RAM: 512MB Corsair XMS
Video Card: Get a Radeon 8500 128MB card for right now, or wait for Radeon 9700 though it will be expensive.
Sound: Get a mobo with integrated sound
Ethernet: Integrated ethernet too
Hard Drive: Depends how big and what you need, the WD 80GB Special Edition drives are piced WELL now.
DVD-ROM: SKip the CDROM get a 16X Lite-on DVD ROM
CDRW: Lite-On 40X CDRW
Both systems can be had for an excellent price and plenty good
and upgradable

Thanks for putting some time into that post Brent.. But..
This computer will be lasting me for how ever long I am in college...
If I build it in like 6 months or so, it will be over a year outdated, then it will be like 3 years outdated. Since I'm going to community college..
So I don't want to spend a lil amount of money in 6 months, then in 2 years spend a lil bit more..
I would like to just buy an amazing one and let it last me.. Am I wrong to think that this idea is a better one?
ONE OF THE THINGS I WOULD LOVE TO DO IS BUY LIKE A P3 650 OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND TAKE IT APART AND PUT IT BACK TOGETHER....

then wait
first decide what platform you want
AMD or Intel ?
Dual Channel DDR is around the corner if you like DDR and can go that route on Intel or AMD platform
32bit RAMBUS 4200 is also out now and could go that route on the Intel platform
Serial ATA this fall also
And of course bestest vid card being Radeon 9700 out in 1 month
And then Hammer on the horizon as well
And P4's keep getting faster

Brent. I would like to thank you again for your opinions. They mean alot to me as you are a computer "nut" and you know your crap..
First off, I would like to get an amd, as I have heard only good stories from friends who have them.
I don't want to get the new radeon card. As that will be like $700 Canadian.. One thing I might do is when the new nvidia card comes out I would think about getting that.. Ive had an ati radeon and again, it was nothing but problems..

Mutch,
A GF4 Ti4400 or Ti 4200 is more than enough to take you through the near future in games. And cost a lot less...
Get a good ATX case. Good ventilation and enough bays for expansion... IMHO, no less than 2 at 80mm intake and 2 at 80mm exhaust fans...
Get a great psu. This is the main thing that I would say to not skimp on... Most cases that are sold with a psu, have a crap psu in them... Either consider them "upgrading the psu" or get a case with out one... The psu can cause you more unexplained problems than just about any hardware fault...
Same logic as the video card, applies to the cpu... Get an XP 1800+ or 1900+... The difference is basically not noticeble...
You could actually drop down from the XP and still be fine...
A good mobo utilizing ddr 333, PC2700 will do you well...
512 MB of RAM is a great amount. For your applications, anything more than 2 at 256MB is a waste... Really...

Whoa, easy there dude. Calm down a bit.Originally posted by HongKongPolice
Omg i'm sick of seeing ppl order parts online. WHY ARE ORDERING PARTS ONLINE?!?!? Goto a LOCAL store and they'll have ALL the parts you need, and if you bargain, you can even get TAX FREE!!
Shut up dude, you're the same age as me "YOUNG ONE"
Get a copy of Toronto Computes, theres GOT to be some local stores around you, its not like you live in Redneck country. Even if there isn't, how far is it to drive to the nearest decent store? No more than an hour
While something may apply to you, it does NOT apply to everyone else. If you have a good computer store near you, or even if you have one within driving distance, it doesn't mean everyone else does.
I'm completely in favor of supporting a local business over another one in a different state. But when the best "deal" the local one can give me is $18 for an IDE cable or $80 for a crappy case, I have no choice. Add that to a paltry stock of comonents that might've impressed someone four years ago, and you can see why I (like many others) prefer to order online. I wouldn't mind paying a little more to support the community, but that's not always an option.
And as far as bargaining for something to be "tax free", it isn't so. If you bargain with someone and they end up dealing you an offer that'll remove the tax on the price, THEY still have to cough up with the tax dough. Sure, you make out with a little deal, but they definately don't.
And now that you brought up tax, let me tell you something. A while ago, I was pricing some parts on Newegg, back when their shipping rates were pretty high on everything (now its just high on some of the stuff

Fine, you made a point that people need to look beyond "online" when shopping for something, computer parts or otherwise. But taking a hostile attitude, or attacking a member who's looking for help won't get anyone's attention to your point, at least not in a positive way.
Power supply: PC Power & Cooling Silencer ATX 400. Expensive, but the regulation is superb:

You don't need a lot of fans if you plan your air flow carefully.
( I'm happy with one fan, myself).

i've never ever, ever ever had an issue of ANY sort with a sound blaster card (been using them since 1995), with any chipset or any O/S. I've got probably 30 PC's out in the field right now with sound blaster/VIA mixed. Not yet have I had an issue.
If they become troublesome, they will be tossed.
does the TB santa cruz have stereo RCA inputs & SPDIF & Firewire & remote control on it? Thats the main reason I like the audigy platinums besides the fact that they've never given me probs.
