How to set up my cable on a new comp?
I got a new system the other day and I need help setting up my cable on it as @home tech support well...no longer exists. Fortunantly it has a network card already installed (Sinse I don't think the 98 drivers would work on xp) so to my knowledge all I need is to find out where all my connection info is on 98 system and where I put this info in on my XP system. I have my ideas but I don't want to do anything unless I know I'm doing it right.
Right click on My Computer. Select Properties. Select Computer Name. Select Change. Make the Workgroup @home and the computer name the one @home gave you. The C-XXXXXXX-a number. Select OK.
Right click My Network Places. Select Properties. Right click your NIC's icon. Select Change settings of this connection in the Network Tasks pane to the left. In the Local Area Connection Properties window that pops up, right click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then select Properties. Check the Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically. All other boxes are blank and unchecked. Click over to the Alternat Configuration tab and check the Automatic private IP address and all other boxes are empty and unchecked. Select OK and OK and then you'll reboot.
That should get you online in your modem in synched and all is well with the network.

XP is very good in helping setup computers on a network that are using other OS's. When you go network setup in XP it will ask you if you have any other computers on your network not using XP. You will have an option to download some files to a floppy. Take those files over to your other computer that doesnt have XP and run "Netsetup" which is on the floppy.
It will install files that will allow it to work with XP computer over your network.

Yes Roody. If Kevin is on a LAN, but I didn't see where he said he was on a LAN. Not to mention that he's setting up a brand new XP system to run on @home. You're advice works excellent after the XP is already setup on the Net and then adding another computer on a LAN.
Or did I read his post incorrectly?

I WISH I was on a lan. I have alot of stuff I want to transfer and my old comps cd burner keeps getting errors and my A drive is kind of...busted.
Knowing nothing about lans, I don't suppose it's possible for me to set one up w/o buying $100 worth of equipment?
Got my cable hooked up on my new computer btw. Thanks Dakota.

Cool! You're welcome Kevin. Good to hear yer online!
All ya need to run a great LAN with both puters having Net access is a router. You can run across less-than-$80 deals on a Linksys or NetGear router almost anytime. Now'd be a good time to track one down with retailers still trying to scarf all the holiday funds they can before people hunker down for the winter and contemplate their Christmas bills.
Oh...And welcome to SpeedGuide too. Pop over to the Tweaking Forum too to get the most out of your 'advertised' speeds.
Happy New Year!
