Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by Jon »

Does anyone know what ports need to be forwarded to host a game of Return to Castle Wolfenstein Multiplayer TEST.

Thanks

How are you launching the game? Running dedicated? It's easy as Q3...I have a few servers up. Running the full game now on our main server, 209.150.0.191.

Anyways, 27960, just like Q3, is the standard port. How are you starting the game, and what makes you say it's not working? Can someone connect directly? Or cuz you don't see it broadcasted yet in the server list?

Well it did verify sending heartbeat to master server ,I did open correct ports and rechecked my cd key but a buddy of mine couldnt see me at all.So we waited .......waited.....waited...anyhow I never posted for some reason, so I tried dmz and straight shot and nothing???wierd I have hosted many games and never had any trouble.Yes I run dedicated and no my buddies and I cannot connect directly to anyone, makes me believe the server side of RTCWS sucks but hey never messed with quake engine server side much, mostly unreal engine.

Besides even client side has its issues or maybe just me and my friends :I try to connect to a server (keep in mind cd key is good and its all there)says cd key not valid (wait 1 minute) reconnect to same server and connects?????Or I get errors saying client not auth then it connects????LOL

Never seen so many glitchy issues, funny thing though quake engine is supposed to be one of the best server\client network builds for gaming out there ,also note I own 4 computers 4 different cd keys all have different hardware and my ping when I do connect to most servers is extremely low like 40-57 ping so not a lag issue and filters on there end set on view all and made sure my game was set to default mp and he had all filters set to view all and ................nothing......

Other problems I found with server sides is they dont report correct client numbers on server list or correct client caps?I have seen many servers say 40-47 total clients and report they have 30 or 40 people playing and thats a refreshed list and you log on and there are only 19 clients playing and the cap is really around 30 ...wierd.

Question YeOldeStonecat does the master server take forever and also maybe the game settings themselves may effect the launch?Any how whats the connection you running that server on YeOldeStonecat?

I'll reply more from my home tonight....have more info there, as I'm at the office fighting with a Win2K Small Biz server.

Just stay with the port forwarding, not DMZ. Only need one port. What OS are you serving from? I've been running from NT 4 server fine, current one is running on a server that 3x other UT servers run on, sitting in a data center of my ISP fed by 4x OC-3 lines.

Honestly, haven't found RTCW to be difficult or unreliable, have been running servers since the first Test Demo, the 2nd one, now the full version. I remote admin them from home via the latest RCon...same one for the latest Q3. It's pretty easy to mess around with and customize with .cfg files.

Anyways, later tonight, I'll reply with the correct shortcut commands to get a dedicated to run properly...it's not just a shortcut to the .exe...you need to enter several commands.

I am just trying to get a few buddies of mine to play a game I am hosting on the same machine I am playing on.

I had 27960 forwarded and it was a no go. No one could connect.

All I did was create a server from within the game.

Yes it was a typo, I did mean 27960. I think its not us (our comps\connections)I think its a combination of those stupid cd keys and the master server.

I gave up on the game ,I uninstalled it from all 4 of my computers after it keep telling me that my cd keys were not valid on about 25 different servers, and to think about the fact that these were brandnew games out the box and keys were supposedly good????I get other errors like client not authorized??So I have to say for a fun game I myself give it 2 thumbs down for poor server side programming and stupid cd keys.

But hey you guys seem to have good luck with it so have fun ;)

If you were useing the Eye to scan and join servers from there is a known problem with the Eye and invalid cdkeys

Eye or no eye the game has issues, I have very little patients with games that dont work the way there suppose to.I understand that many games have problems or master server setups due to the fact that they were rushed or just plain poor programming, I do not like the setup with the keys and the way the servers post in wolfenstein or cs there are to many bugs.

Examples:I have multiple broadband connections in my house, now when I refresh or grab a new list from the master server on one computer (keep in mind that they are all set to same filter)it post a list of servers, now I refresh or grab a new list on another computer seperate connection and it shows me a different list of servers and its very annoying.

I understand has well that there are sometimes different master servers that populate a list of different servers depending on location routing etc etc but I still think its a flaky setup and they could have done better.

Has far has cd keys go, I think thats the worst idea ever case being:somebody steals you key=screwed
lost key =screwed
and flaky cd key checks=screwed
or the fact that I have to buy 4 copies of each game so that I may play it on all 4 computers at same time= ripoff

I tried hosting a last time last night and it was a no go.I have hosted literally around 25 different games with no problems besides WS and sometimes CS cause of there poor network setups, CS I understand was a mod and ....well mods are going to be unstable at times thats why it had so many patches etc etc but WS is a off the shelf game buy a team of programmers that is supposed to be atleast "somewhat" a FULLY functional game and hopefully a FULLY functional serverside\masterserver\cdkey check setup ;)

Dont get me wrong the game still kicks ass in the fun factor :D

Phantom...you mentioned multiple broadband, eh? You have the load balancing Nexland, don't you? Wonder if your "shotgunning" two WAN connections creates multiple WAN IP's that hose your cd-key on pure servers. Hmmm...

Bummer it's not working for you, cuz I'm quite huge into online FPS games...and DAMN is this game sweet online! Single player gets incredible too once you're outside, starting at around the rocket site.

Yea I tried it without the routers has well and same thing,I thought exactly what you did since its multiple ips that are hosting cd-keys on pure servers, besides there are so many servers on there its no big deal ;)

HA.............I have found a way to host a server were the client needs no cd key......and have also found a way around joining another server without the hassle of errors or invalid cd key crap. :D

All you have to do.....this is funny,is set your server to dedicated lan it will not send heartbeat out and will not check for keys, then set up a "fake server" computer to post the ip (game name) but put a firewall in front of it.Ofcourse use a router.

By doing this the people will see your post and click they will be routed to the open ports on the lan set server and no cd key checks because the game thinks your playing on lan!

Has far has getting on a server just download gamespy for the cd key check screwups are not very common there ;)

Heh, cool strategy. If you still have the client installed, I'll be home tonight playing around, prob on our server...swing on by. If the server is full, blast me an ICQ (YeOldeStonecat), I'll see it eventually (always running on another box at home) and kick some peeps for ya.
