High/Inconsistent Ping

Post by Justifis »

For the past week to two weeks I've been having an issue with ping, the CMD ping should explain itself:

Code: Select all

Pinging google.com [74.125.228.8] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 74.125.228.8: bytes=32 time=83ms TTL=57

Ping statistics for 74.125.228.8:
    Packets: Sent = 15, Received = 15, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 615ms, Average = 115ms
Normally I would be running a consistent 20-23ms, especially to Google. Here is also a tracert to Google:

Code: Select all

Tracing route to google.com [74.125.228.4]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 2 ms 1 ms 1 ms dslrouter.westell.com [10.0.0.1]
  2 13 ms 14 ms 14 ms nc-76-4-24-1.dhcp.embarqhsd.net [76.4.24.1]
  3 13 ms 14 ms 14 ms 71-32-28-145.rcmt.qwest.net [71.32.28.145]
  4 22 ms 21 ms 20 ms dcx2-edge-02.inet.qwest.net [67.14.28.138]
  5 22 ms 19 ms 22 ms 65.122.30.210
  6 34 ms 326 ms * 209.85.252.46
  7 213 ms 22 ms 22 ms 72.14.238.173
  8 50 ms 24 ms 21 ms iad23s05-in-f4.1e100.net [74.125.228.4]

Trace complete.
I've tried resetting my gateway (Westell A90-750022-07) multiple times with no change. I've also tried using PingTest.net multiple times with results varying from 21ms ping and 2ms jitter to 419ms ping and 798ms jitter. Might be worth noting that a technician had to come out and replace our phone jack once months ago due to it being corroded or something. It really sucks for pages to take forever to load as well as online games jittering. Any suggestions?

Well, I know a major part of the issue now. Here is a ping test to Google.com while on a wired connection, same computer:

Code: Select all

Pinging google.com [74.125.228.7] with 32 bytes of data:

And a tracert once more:

Code: Select all

Tracing route to google.com [74.125.228.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Trace complete.
Only thing out of the ordinary is the small spike in the third hop, probably a problem on the DNS side I assume, as well as the one that dropped on the sixth hop. So, now my question changes, how can I improve ping over my wireless connection?
