laptop batteries question

Post by Dan »

I have a HP DV6T-3100 lt with the standard battery & a long life 9 cell battery,I don't use the it too often, mostly for travel, everything is working fine,

my question is this,do I need to discharge or run the batteries all the way down once in a while ? or what's good maintenance for these batteries ?
or do I not even need to do anything ?

Li-ion laptop batteries usually discharge at a very slow pace on their own when unused. It is ok to fully charge them and let them discharge on their own. They last longest if they're not fully charged/discharged, around 40-60% is best. Also, extreme temperatures should be avoided (hot is a bit worse than cold).

Some people suggest to fully charge/discharge periodically, however, they achieve that on their own, given enough time. A new battery usually needs to be fully charged/discharged a couple of times before it reaches its optimum potential.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, just avoid leaving them in fully charged/discharged state for a very long time.
