Haven't done one of these in a while...curious what kind of setups everyone plays on these days.

Soon to be router/server is a HP Proliant DL360 - 2 x 3 ghz Xeon / 3 gb / 2 x 36 gb 10k scsi - currently running WHS
I hope to run some version of ipcop/clearos/untangle/endian in a VM

I have an HP Proliant ML350 G3 which is going to a client for a new used server for him, and an IBM X-Server x330, dual Xeon 2.4, 1U rack mount server...not doing much anymore, pair of old 18 gig SCSI drives too small.

Dell some Inspiron model, just sitting there now, probably clean up for the daughter to play her online games with. Pentium 4 H/T vintage.

I have a stack of 6 or so various older laptops...various Thinkpad T20 and T40 series, X40, and a couple of other oddball ones.

My current router is another IBM Thinkpad x40, running PFSense.

I have a Linksys/Cisco wrt150n running DD-WRT as my access point.
A Linksys/Cisco RV082 router..just running as a switch.

My old no longer used access point is a wrt54gl that was running DD, just sitting in my "drawer of stuff" now, along with a couple of Netgear wireless routers, an old SMC, a couple of Cisco PIX501, a Microsoft wireless router, and a plethora of old hardware guts.

I'm wanting to snag a quad core, WD Black Edition, and a Sapphire 5770 myself. Probably rebuild this spring. Current gaming rig actually still can hold its own and running like a top.

I've been using laptops for my *nix router distros for years now...starting with some of those T20 series. I just slap in a PCMCIA NIC for the 2nd NIC. The Thinkpads use business grade hardware on the motherboard that's widely supported by linux, Intel chipsets, usually Intel Pro NICs, etc.

What I like about them as a router?
*Small footbprint, instead of some PC taking up space
*Built in keyboard and mouse, so you get right to local console
*Low power consumption compared to a desktop PC, low noise
*Built in battery backup!

I haven't run PFSense in quite a few years now, I started out with it, it just seemed to stay "dated" to me. I love the QoS/Traffic shaping of PFSense. Works well for my online gaming when others are in the house doing stuff.

I recently put PFSense back into running at my house, for the past couple of months I was playing with ClearOS as my router, which was running in ESXi. ClearOS is VERY cool, has built in server features, sort of like an open source version of Microsoft Small Business Server Premium. It's a spin-off of Clark Connect.

Sava - I had no idea you watercooled....I've always been to scared to try it.

yep.. its safe. I got a tower setup to cool the CPU only..didn't run other hoses to the video card. The bios on the system board is set for a high temp shut down so if the tower fails it will shut off.

Loop-
I still love my Klipsch 4.1 promedia speakers. What else compares to them? I stepped on the plug that goes into the amp. I had it repaired but now get some static every now and then. Did a quick search...I dont see many others that have a sub that compares to the promedia 4.1. the 2.1 promedia has one speaker in the sub where as the 4.1 has 2 speakers in the subbox itself.

To be honest not a lot, the only game I really ever play is Unreal Tournament 3. I'm so busy most of the time I don't have time to get into gaming. I just want to be able to play something in full screen resolution 1680x1050 and have no lag.... if I want to.

Ya watercooling is safe as long as your careful, and even if your not, just test the system for a day running outside of the pc, make sure theres no leaks and minimum air in the system.

Bought a watercooling unit off of John from here, still runs good, and they can be great for cases that have bad airflow.

According to this article at Anandtech, Q4 of this year should be a good time to get into SSD. Although the OCZ Vertex drives look mighty sweet to me already. If I take the plunge I'm gonna be looking to get rid of my SAS setup....Interested?? I know your love for SCSI and here's a recent bench of hdtach in raid 0.

They have certainly been a pleasure to game on for the last 6-7 years. There is a small short in the control panel where I have to tinker with the volume switch to level out both channels but they can still rattle the windows in the computer room.
