New Computer Won't power on or even Post

Post by opmharley »

Hey guys, have the most annoying problem ever.

Just built a new computer.
MSI G31M3-F V2 Socket 775 Motherboard
Intel Duo Core E5300
Crucial 4gb DDR2 800
WD 500gb Sata

Stock Coolmaster PSU 350w.

When I look in the manual for the motherboard it doesn't have it listed as supported but its the same socket. When I press the power switch nothing happens, no fan,no beep, nothing. I'm thinking its the cheap power supply that came with the case. I've built alot of computers and never had this problem.

Please help, lol

Thanks, Harley

test the power supply... the good ol paper clip trick oughtta do it.
or just swap it out with another PSU... see if that works...

ill try out the paper clip trick, what are the chances of getting defective stuff brand new? I've never had a computer just not power up. This is so annoying

Eh, it's happened to me several times before. Well at least computers with bad power supplies straight out of the box but luckily I always had spares. Got to love hardware, it's so random, one day it works, the next it's completely dead for absolutely no reason at all.

so what are the results of the paper clip trick?

20 pin plus the 4 pin you can plug in. The guy took all of the parts back and they tried telling him the guy installing the system didnt know what he was doing (there talking about me) and that I bent a pin on the motherboard?

wtf? What pin are they talking about. So now this guy thinks I'm some idiot who don't know how to build a computer and is paying them the 85 bucks. I've build a decent amount of computers and never have had this problem before.

they also told him you can't put windows xp on this computer there going to custom build. Same specs I gave. Said windows won't recognize the drivers?
what are these people telling this guy?

What? This thread confuses me.

-I bought PC parts
-No power
-manual doesnt have it listed but its the same socket
-sending parts back will get a dell
-they tell guy about me for this and that
-can has bent pin/cant has windows XP

What did you buy that is the same socket but not listed in the mobo manual? CPU, PSU?

The MSI website shows XP drivers so I dont know why they would say you can't run XP on it. But then who are THEY? This is now at a repair shop and maybe they don't sell XP anymore?

I bought all of the parts listed above. Hooked everything up like your supposed to and no power at all. Not even a fan moving or any lights.

The motherboard manual and website don't have that processor listed as compatible even though its the same socket.

The guy I was supposed to build this computer for took all the parts back to Microcenter and they said I damaged the motherboard and bent a pin on it. I really don't think I bent any pins on the motherboard. Their fairly easy to install.

Now he is paying them 85 dollars to build the computer. They then tried to say that I won't be able to find the drivers for XP and he is going to have to pay them $100 to do it. The guy now doubts that I know how to install XP on a fresh harddrive.

Hmm... Drivers for what in particular?
bent pin? outside the IDE I don't think there's very many pins you can bend...
did they say which pin your bent?

Well that could have been your problem. Just cuz its the right socket doesn't mean it will work.

I still think it's a PSU issue or maybe a Mobo issue.

But as for his problem the only thing I see is the Power supply like others have said. Its a easy check with a volt meter.

I'm pretty sure it was the power supply. Their was no power to the computer at all. No fans, lights, beeps anything. The guys at the shop he took it to said I messed up a pin on the motherboard. I have no idea what pin their talking about.

Actually with a socket 775 it is very easy to bend a pin and if you bend the wrong one it could very easily do what you say.

I actually was an idiot when putting it on and didn't line it up right the first time so I bet that was it. I didn't try forcing it on though. Thanks for all the help guys. I'll be a bit more careful next time. Your help is always appreciated.
