A question about LCD monitors

Post by RoundEye »

I’m thinking a buy one. On a good, better, best scale, I’d like to stay around the better one. I don’t need to have the best, doubt I good afford that any way. I would like to know what brands to stay away from.

On Ubid they have a 22 inch Envision and the bidding is a 70 bucks right now, seems like a hell of a deal to me. I bought the monitor I have right now on Ubid about ten years ago, a 21 inch flatscreen Dell branded Sony Trinitron CRT for 90 bucks, brand new.

I’m looking to get another deal, I just need to what is good, better, best and what totally sucks.

Any info?

Don't get that monitor, it's only 1,000:1 contrast ratio.
For a monitor that size get a minimum of 2500:1 contrast ratio.

Thanks for the heads up on the contrast ratio. I noticed the higer the contrast, the higher the higher the price, Like This.

A couple more questions,
Any other specs I should worry about? Keep in mind this PC is connected to my stereo and 50 inch plasma too as a second monitor. I used to use it for gaming too, not so much anymore, it more of the entertainment system. For DVD’s and all that jazz.

Is DC just as good? DC 50000:1 dynamic contrast ratio

Response time - lower is better
Contrast Ratio - higher is better
Resolution - higher is better (1920x1200 is pretty much standard now)
Brightness - brightness of an LCD monitor is, simply enough how bright the image is (cd/m2)
Interface - how does it receive the signal
Viewing Angle - how far off center you can view the screen from and still see an image

I figured response time would be important, especially in gaming and action flicks, to reduce ghosting.

The variety of screen is quite important. The fastest and least expensive screens are of the TN variety, which also have the poorest viewing angles.

Be mindful that some monitors with built in inteligence do have a lag time, which can be deadly for first person shooters.
