If you have recently installed Adobe Acrobat 8, you may have noticed that it launches a process called FNPLicensingService.exe

http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/Runnin ... it%3F.html

I shut it down at the firewall and terminated it... but there are better ways of controlling it.

You just terminated the process? But it will keep launching each time you use Acrobat, correct?

I installed Acrobat Professional Version 8 recently, so I guess that is why I'm getting this.

I read the link you provided. I wonder what the problem is if it does not shutdown this service after you exit Adobe. It says it should be doing this.

Yep

Yep. I don't like Acrobat to start each time I start the computer so I removed Acrobat from the startup list. When I need it, I start it (which is about once a week or two).

I too have Acrobat removed from starting anything with the computer. I don't like to waste resources and memory. So if you use Acrobat, you just manually terminate that process each time you finish, right?

Right. I left it running one day and noticed that the firewall said it was doing a lot of "checking back home" for updates. Too many checks.

This reall sucks that Acrobat added this extra process. And I had just recently took all of Adobe Acrobat, (readers and full versions), off all my 4 computers, then loaded Acrobat 8 Professional, (I find the add-in to Word useful for some things I do).

The alternative mentioned in the link above, Free FoxIt Reader. Does that only offer Acrobat Reader functions or is there a version that emulates Acrobat Pro functions?

No fully functional PDF creators out there for free that emulate full Adobe Acrobat that I know of. Yeah FoxIt is excellent, instead of the Adobe Reader. Opens up very snappily...since it's so light. Since version 6...the ever increasing in bloat Adobe Acrobat and Reader has also been installing a "Help the Hog over the fence" process which launches from your Run section of the registry...which ..each time you restart your PC, launches part of the program into memory...so the rest of the program "appears" to launch quicker when you call upon it.

FNPLicensingService.exe

Post by deDogs »

I have found that FNPLicensingService.exe process is loaded while starting Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat Reader 8.0. While this process stays resident while these programs stay open, it also remains resident when these applications are closed.

If I changed the name or removed FNPLicensingService.exe, these applications would error and close. Therefore, I thought to write a simple vb.net application that would play the middle man when loading these applications.

I call this application "Kill_FNPLicensingService.exe." It is a standalone application with no API and never stays resident past what it is intended for, and that being "killing the FNPLicensingService.exe process." If interested, I will include the vb.net code.

It is very simple application approx: 24KB. How it works is simple:
Instead of clicking on Photoshop, Illustrator, or Acrobat, you click on Kill_FNPLicensingService.exe, and Kill_FNPLicensingService.exe will open one of these applcation by the path that you would supply via a command argument.

Example:
To open photoshop:
C:\Kill_FNPLicensingService.exe E:\Adobe\AdobeP~2\Photoshop.exe

Notice that I had stored Kill_FNPLicensingService.exe on my C:\ root. Since it is a standalone, you can store Kill_FNPLicensingService.exe anywhere on your system (you need not install it nor does it reflect in your registery), and notice that my complete path to Photoshop is on my E:\ drive. You must supply the applications complete path.

That is it!

So basically Kill_FNPLicensingService.exe will open Photshop, wait approx a minute, and kill the FNPLicensingService.exe. I found these applications only need FNPLicensingService.exe while they are opening, so when they have completly opened, you can stop FNPLicensingService.exe, and this is what Kill_FNPLicensingService.exe does. After Photoshop is loaded, it kills FNPLicensingService.exe.

You can find Kill_FNPLicensingService.exe at http://nomadicDog.com.

I hope this helps,

I would love it if you posted that.

I have CS3 and it comes with bonjour and my husband from somewhere got it that it was a rootkit? But my CS3 and Quicktime no longer works photoshop opens says I need to reinstall it or contact an administrator and then closes back down. Is there someway that if I reinstall photoshop that he can make it work so that bonjour doesn't need to run and still keep photoshop working.
From my understanding bonjour is to connect computers to gather so they can share files but to contact other computers you have to tell it to do so first anyway. Any help on this would be appreciated.
I actually have a registered version and the one light version you were talking about. It does really good except I cant save png files or use the browse but other wise it's great. I would prefer to use the registered version of CS3 as I can get help when I need it.
Thanks
Jules
