They do have auto updates and you can apply them, but we are talking about XBL, they always implement some sort of detection and the hackers have to get rid off it (new firmware). It's not easy job, it's tons of work and they do it for free.
No my 360 isnt modded :D
I can hook you up with modder in Toronto or Vancouver but I suggested craiglist and search your area. "xbox 360" "modding xbox" "modders" etc.
Some people use mods just because they want backup their original games, some of them use it because they cant afford to spend $200 every month for new games but the real advantage is, the full DVD9 NTSC is ready for download 1-2 weeks before it hits store shelfs.
You will need clone cd burn the game at 1-2speed maximum and DL DVD+R.

Well not necessarily all true Rivas, the fact is, sometimes we get games AFTER they've released the retail games and it's rare that we get an 1-2 week early release, most of the times it's 1-3 days that's it.

I download the games simply because I can't afford them and most aren't worth buying, at least in my opinion. I do a try before buy type of thing, so far there hasn't been many games that really fit my interest so I haven't really bought many games, my most recent buy was Mass Effect --if you didn't see the news all over the place, Toys "R" Us, Wal-Mart and K-Mart released the full retail game 10 days early so it wasn't exactly an early leak for the modders seeing that it was widely available.--, of course that had me sold from the beginning seeing as it was an RPG of sorts and there's not many RPG's, at least ones that don't have a turn based fighting system. Though even though I did buy it I still downloaded it just so I could play the backup instead of the original.

My Xbox 360 still has issues with scratching games even when it's not moved during play so I often did the rental swap, though even so the rentals are sometimes really horrid and barely playable as well so that's why I basically modded mines from the start.

P.S. This is not a flame.

You take the risk of being banned from Xbox Live by modding your Xbox 360 so in other words, there's a chance you'll get caught, if you do, either you can just give up on modding and buy and play legitimate games or you could simply do the shop swap.

Never say Never :D
Before you apply update for XBL read what does it do.
If it's just some support for guitar/racing wheel/HD DVD drive, then it's np, if it's something else and people are being banned you have to wait for new firmware and then apply the update.
You are not going to be banned from LIVE, your 360 serial number will be banned.Thats why people did swaps.
