Need help if you can

I run on Windows XP, a local cable company, kgldcable.com if you need to know, and the

speeds I am to get are 512kbps down and 128 kbps up.

Those are my test speeds, but my main problem seems to be latency, so I will give you a

tracert and ping

I have cleaned out my computero f spyware as said in the forums, used TCP/IP Optimizer,

and reset my modem a few times with no luck.

Now, my main problem is, my bittorrent is running as fast as a 56k (not to mention even

browsing is like 56k a lot now) when it was running full speed about 5 or so days ago.

The same can be said for FTP, but even worse, I even tried that OOL ftp speed test, I

am lucky to get over 1 kilobyte for long.

Is there something wrong on my side, or do I need to call up my cable provider?

Tell me if you need anything more, or if I have done something incorrectly.

Your tracert and ping plots at dslreports.com points to problem at hop 1.

It could be that your modem is being affected by electromagnetic interference from some nearby electrical device or that it is faulty.

What kind of firewall and antivirus you use may also be a factor. Did the slowdown happened suddenly or over a period of time?

It was sudden, like overnight.

I currently have no firewall at all, I even disabled windows firewall, no new devices or objects are in the room in which the ocmputer is, much less close to the modem.

I will try the line test again, and see if I get better.

Oh yea, here is my testing histroy, at the 29th was when I stopped checking to tweak it, cable still being decently new. The 12th is probably when I started testing around, not long after the problem started, to find out what was wrong, as you can see, I have a successful line test in between then and now, and I don't understand what was different between that one and all my other attempts.

While you have said your ISP is a local cable company, your tracert at hop 2 shows your line to belong to tds.net

I did a search for TDS and their site has an announcement while may be a possible cause for your slow speed:

I will try to do what they ask me, but I have to say, TDS only offers Dial up and DSL, I am surely not using either :-P

Plus, though I maybe should have mentioned it earlie and forgot, our tv uses the cable from kgldcable.com as well as the internet.

Well, tried what they wanted to see if I had it and using safe mode for it to scan, went to bed, got back up and noticed that my connection is now running as 56k even through http -.-.

Give me a second to reboot my computer and look at some stuff to see why this is happening now :-(.

Now with all that you know that your internet is from TDS which in-turn is from Cogent, att, and is more likely hooked up with more backbones.

Just a few questions, Are you inside an internal network(like one with a NAT)? If not can you tell me what gateway the isp is having you use.

Now that i think of it even if you are in a Nat can you find that info?

If they own those ips though, mine starts with 12.173...

what exactly is a Nat? Are you talking about the default gateway

You can find the IP address of your ISP's default gateway by logging into your router and checking out the WAN status.

In a NAT, your comp will only display the LAN's default gateway which is the IP address of the router.

I suggest you contact your cable company to get them to get TDS to make a check on their line. Over half of your speedtests show very high latency. This would be caused by the switch of TDS as seen in hop 3 of your tracert.

A NAT is formed when you place a router between your comp and the modem. See this link for more:

Well, I don't have a router, so I suppose that doesn't apply to me, but thanks for the advice too, I will call and see if they come up with anything.

Ok I see. I thought that mabe your ip was 69.130.116.25 . Anyway hemm... Oic on your speed tests it says AT&T and the entire 12.0.0.0 is owned by AT&T but your isp may own a few ip address in there too. But yes I would also suggest you call them and ask whats up with the link.

I've got an idea. Since your problem seems to be the hop to 69.130.116.17 and then every thing after that is crap, try a trace route to 66.98.244.1 . Because if this works the way I think it should your second router you run into wont be 69.130.116.17 but it will be 69.130.116.2 and then you can tell your isp that you think the problem is at 69.130.116.17 . Tell me how the trace route goes. :)

After your ping times become normal, reduce your TCP Window to 17520. This will give you a more stable speed and sufficient latency to surf to the EU.

Thanks, I found out the problem, I can only download like 10 gigs max, and we were not told it, (they don't really have a site saying what their plans are, we were just told the speeds and all in conjunction with our cable tv.

Had 56k with it earlier and I was wanting to see some things and didn't take all that long for it to hit the max I guess.

>.>, I will deal, and thanks a lot for your help, if you didn't tell me to contact them I probably would have waited a while longer before I knew of this limitation on our cable.

Edit: Okay, backtrack, it isn't because I hit the limit, though I didn't think it wasn't possible, it was because I was using up too much speed and I was the top user, you know, just got the cable, so I used torrent to get like linux and a game and such. So then they blocked me up O.o.

Happens I suppose because I am in a small local cable company that is in a town where everyone is a redneck :-P

Oh and apparently I am still top user in the area since I have been doing all these tests >.>.
