Computer Suggestions (lots of hard drives)

Post by jmw1137 »

I'm looking to get a computer that I can put 4-5 hard drives into. The only brand I'd prefer to stay away from is Dell but other than that I'm pretty open. I was checking out Systemax and it looks like a few of their systems can handle it but am not sure. Also, if I do get a system and have up to 5 HDs I'm guessing I'll need a bigger power supply...right? Would 500w do it?

why not just build your own computer so you can customize it, case and all

with 5 drives i recommend no less than a 550 watt PSU from a name brand like Vantec or Antec

Ya, if you're looking to make a server or whatever you want the computer for then build your own, or go to http://www.meshcomputers.com, you can customise a whole PC to what you want on there and they'll build it for you with warranty etc.

How much storage are you looking at? Why not just purchase fewer bigger drives instead of 5 seperate ones? Then you would use less for the powersuply....

if you don't want to build it yourself...check out http://www.monarchcomputers.com as they have a section where you can customize a pc to your liking and they will assemble, setup and test it for you.

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous

Have you considered running a standard computer and using daisy-chained firewire drives?

I have 5 HD's in a antec case, running 550watt PS without any issues. Plus, I have a 2-HD firewire enclosure that I got from ebay for $40 and another firewire enclosure that I travel with.

I have 7 drives in one box with an Antec 500 watt supply. No problems.
