I rescued a horse today

Post by brembo »

Same job as the little old lady incident, but on a different side.

I had a 996 foot line to traverse and decided to use an adjacent horse pasture instead of fighting the briars. Wandered out into it and found a nice spot for a traverse point and got on with what I do. Heard a horse just raising hell in the woods, beyond where the fence looked to be. Being a curious kinda person I hiked up to the top of the field and saw that a horse had jumped the fence and had become hopelessly entangled in some EVIL looking briars.

So I pondered what to do. I know very little about horse goings-on. I do know however that they are immensly strong, easily spooked and kinda delicate in the leg area. SO I decided against goin up to the horse and trying to free it. I decided to try and find the owner. I just happened to have my adjaceny report for the property and found the land owners name. SWEET! Dial 411 and get a number. Unlisted. Damn......

Sheriffs department was next, see if they could track the owner down. They took my info and said to hang in the area if needed. In about 5 mins the 'All Creatures Great and Small' bunch called. A volunteer group that aids in rescue and finding lost animals. Gave em directions. Waited. Got another idea and began calling neighbors(411 is so nice) and figured out where the horse owner lived. Had time, so I drove by there and no one was home. Damn again.

The All Creatures folks showed up and we began the hike to the pasture. Just as we were crossing the fence to go to the top of the pature the horse owner showed up in his Uber 4x4.

I stood behind and tried to soothe the other horse(it was goin ape ****) while they cut and untangled the briars from the horse. Once freed it galloped to its pal and all was well. I gave the horses some sweet-feed and went back to work.

Also saw a snake today IN THE MIDDLE OF FEBRUARY. I thought my eyes were playing tricks as the area I was in is a snake pit in the summer(saw oodles of em last time I was back in there). Sure enough a small garden snake was up on a log sunning itsself. I picked it up, very letharic, seemed to like my hands warmth. Set it back down and continued on. Still its nuts to see a reptile out in the middle of winter.

I cried Noevo. In fact, I am still sobbing quietly here.

That was a beautiful story Brembo, just beautiful. :thumb:

Seriously....
Well done. It's great to be able to free a stuck animal and see it run free again.

As for the snake tale, we have had the worst season for them here and have to live with them all year round. What snakes do you mainly see round the "snake Pit"?

Croc-

Mostly just water type snakes and the occasional copperhead. Nothing that even qualifies as "venomous" comapred to the ones in yer area. A copperhead bite in terms of what a brown could do to ya is just a scratch. Folks say that there are water mocassins around, but I have yet to see one.
