SBC Yahoo DSL
SBC Yahoo DSL
is it good? what are the speeds you can get with SBC Yahoo DSL?
The apartment complex I want to move into this summer only offers SBC DSL for broadband Internet
I'm so use to and love my Comcast cable here, cause I've got good speeds, 3.3mbps down/256kbps up.
Think this SBC DSL could match those speeds for the same price i'm paying for Cable? $50 a month

Never was much of a fan of long term contracts like DSL has. Looks like you're limited to 1.5 on their regular residential plan, whereas their 'gold' package, as it were, is $44.95 a month, but goes up to 139.95 per month after the first year. Ouch.

I pay 29.95 a month for my SBC/Yahoo DSL sevice. I have only ever had a few outages that were resolved the same day. The customer service to my experience has always been exceptional as well.
My speeds are generally 1.5/256 sometimes the download dips a little, but not often.
They are just now offering another package for $45 that offeres aminimum 3.0 Mb/s download, but I have been reading some claims that peeps have been getting close to 6Mb/s!!! Not bad for $45 IMHO
my up;load used to be 128 but they incresed it to 256 without a change in price and without even notifying me.
I am thouroughly pleased with SBC/Yahoo.

yeah, but after 12 months you can cancel and rejoin with no cooling fee and take advantage of whatever plan they are then offering. I did it with no interruption of service AND got a new modem to boot!

Thanks Indy, check this out, this is for my area, zip code 75052, area code 972

Same thing as you've got up there basically
I like the looks of the Expert Plus Package except for after that one year it jumps up to $140, that is just WAY to much
It looks like the Standard Plus Package is the best money wise, after a year it goes to $50, but the damn thing is only 384kbps-1.5mbps down and 128kbps up, which SUCKS since I'm use to 3.3mbps/256kbps up on Comcast Cable.
Ugh
I hate DSL, expensive, and slower.
I really like this apartment complex too, but this sucks that that is all that I can get there.
They can't even get Comcast cable TV, I'd have to get a Dish if I want TV.
argh

Thanks, I see you're happy with it. That helps some.
But I still don't like the speeds/price of DSL vs. Comcast Cable Internet.
I'm payin actually $40 a month here for Cable (since i bought my own cable modem) and I get 3.3mbps down and 256kbps up.
I really want to move into those apartments, but the only broadband they offer is the SBC DSL, argh.

Hrm, that's a thought.
It works for you, but would it work for me here.

If I ever have to move, one of the deciding factors for me will be whether or not the place I'm moving to has service provided by comcast. One, for obvious reasons, the benefits that I enjoy as a tech. Two, even if I didn't have the job that I do, I would still look for a Comcast area, because I know what to expect from them, and I know what to expect from SBC around here...my sister-in-law has SBC, and has had nothing but problems with them. Granted, this may just be an area to area type thing...

That's cool that you're able to get that to happen, but that's no guarentee that Brent would be able to get in on the same deal 12 months down the road...

I say it depends how good the phone wirring is in ur house and how far away from centeral office when i had sbc i got really good speeds but I admit the price is touch much. If you are close to the central office sign up for the 1.5/3.0 plain it will be about the same as cable.
My speeds with sbc were 1.3 no matter what i did i didn't rewire that could've been well but dsl is always a little slower then advertised however i know a guy in michagian i'm helping out through aim that is now getting 1.5 on 384-1.5 plain but he is only 3000 ft from co.

I've setup over a hundered of them, quite possibly near two hundred. SBC/Yahoo, previously in my area...SNET, is the predominate DSL provider in CT.
Honestly, pretty decent now that the big merger has settled down. A couple of years ago early into the merger support was somewhat grueling to go through if you needed something done. But lately...not bad.
As for speeds, you usually have the standard 1,500/128 accounts, or if your wallet is up to it..the 6,000/384 account. Several mixes of dynamic or static IP accounts also in each speed, and several where you get a block of IP's.
Gaming performance...usually average latency for DSL, the phone company isn't really known for giving highest of quality ISP performance. (I don't use them BTW for my home). Realize DSL throughput performance is distant dependent.
I've setup quite a few of their 6,000/384 accounts also. Now those RIP in download speeds, our old office where I used to work, I set them up on that package. It flew in download speeds.

Yes SBC has recently upgraded users that are within 7,000 ft from CO to 6Mbps/608 kbps, take a look here from this SBC Official Tech -- http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r ... ~mode=flat
And even though it says 1.5-3.0Mbps/384-608kbps speeds for $44.95, it's actually 6Mbps/608kbps speeds! http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r ... lec,swbell

this is true, for $44 a month you'll get speed around 6mb/608 download/upload if your 7500ft from the CO/RT.Originally posted by Road Runner Express

$44.95/mo for 6Mbit of bandwidth would be outstanding but the way it was explained to me, if you're more than 7500 ft from the CO, you're stuck at the 1.5Mbit cap no matter what you do.
Does that sound right? It seems like you could at least get half of the 6Mbit if you were a little further away than 7500 ft. away.

I believe if you are above 7,500 ft from CO or RT, then you would get 1.5Mbps-3.0Mbps, or how much they can supply with.

ok, i just called, but they couldn't match up the address
i think i may have written it down wrong, i'll have to find out the right address first and then call them again

Well, they can't tell me by address.
They have to have a working phone number at the place so that they can test the phone number and see the distance of the line.
Since I'm not living there yet, and don't have a phone service there, they cannot tell.
Well crap

Well when are you moving? Is it somewhat nearby? Have your current phone number setup "also" in the new apartment...have it set to "concurrently ring". That way you'll have a working # there sooner, and can look at getting it ordered.
That's what I did when I moved from my old apartment 3 towns over, to my home. Had the phone setup a month ahead, rang in both places at same time.

I don't have to decide on where I want to move to till May. I would move June 1st. So I got time, but I like to know all the details about the things I need to get there before I move in, so I can plan ahead.
Since I just learned Comcast doesn't service the apartment complex I really want to move into I have to look at the alternatives available. That is why i'm researching and getting all the details about the DSL that you can get there.
It is not real close, about 15min away, its in a different city and over the tarrant county line into Dallas county.
I don't have a current Land Line phone. I got rid of that a long time ago when I got my Cell phone. Saves me money to not have a land line phone and just use a cell phone.
Unfortuntely in order to get DSL I will have to pay for a very basic land line phone service through SBC, so I gotta factor that into the overall cost.
