take it back ASAP.
there is no driver for winxp. JVC has a HISTORY of problems with it's firewire ports. If you bought it from ebay and they claimed it works, DEMAND a refund.
I had a 920u that lasted me about a month before the goshdamn firewire port disappeared
I've used over a half dozen miniDV camcorders before. If you are able to return it, let me know what you want to use it for and I'll suggest a replacement.

Hi Nikki.
Do you have the manual for the camera?
JVC automatically uses XP but earlier OS's have software. We had no trouble with our jvc camera and connecting to the computer by USB.
Anyway, if you didn't get the manual for it, you can get a .pdf file here .

If you are running XP, you don't need any. XP does everything for you with it's own prepackaged software....... everything.
With other OS's boot up, then plug the camera into the USB port using the supplied lead and let Plug n Play go to work.
When it detects the camera and asks where the software is, click on "Have Disk" then select the location of the disk.
Sit back and let it load, following the prompts for your OS.
As for the manual, it's a bit technical but if you break it down into sections, a bright girl such as yourself would have no trouble.

firewire/usb...
if nothing is happening, it's one of three things.
1) the cable is bad
2) your usb drivers are not installed or not attached to the mobo
3) jvc mainboard is fried.
Regardless, it should at least be seen. There is a driver disc for your JVC minidv usb to properly function, but it first must see your camcorder.
at this point, I'd take it back. like I first suggested. JVC camcorders are a NIGHTMARE waiting to happen. There are so many problems with those ports failing, it's sick. No wonder they offer only a 3 month warrenty on their products, it's because they KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO FAIL. check out camcorderinfo.com
I tried to have mine fixed and they wanted $550 JUST FOR THE PART. F*ck JVC, they've lost a customer for LIFE and I tell everyone I know the same thing.

Try this Nikki:
Plug the camera into the USB port on the comp after bootup.
There is a 4 position toggle switch on the side near your thumb that has "M", "A", "OFF (Charge)" and "Play".
Move the toggle switch to "Play".
The camera screen should indicate an upload to the computer
A window should then appear giving you some options for viewing/saving the pics/videos you have taken.
You have to also use the switch marked "Video"/"Memory" to go from viewing video to the pics you store on the memory card.
Hope this helps. My camera is almost the same as the one you have and there was no trouble with connecting and saving using XP without the JVC CDRom being loaded. In fact, the paperwork suggests not to use the CD if you are using XP.
Croc.
Also, it may be a good idea to check the Microsoft Update website and get XP updated with the latest Critical/Service Pack and other XP updates.

Well, first, I would buy the "real" retail version of XP no matter what.
Second, are you trying to transfer miniDV video from your new JVC to the PC via USB ? If so, that may not work very good. USB is a little slow transfering video from what I've heard.
Let me look into this a little more. I'll be back in a bit.

Well, hmm... I have found the specs here, but see no mention of FireWire at all. So, you must not have the option. Is this correct ?
If so, you are stuck with USB. I would say that you either need to FIND the driver for it (which may be on the JVC site) or check the ports. It seems that Plug-and-Pray works OK on this side of the pond with certain cameras.
But, the others are right, JVC cameras suck and I would never buy one. My parents have one and it has been to the repair shop several times. Albeit, it is about 5-6 years old and was one of the first affordable miniDV camcorders, but lately, it is falling apart.
Sell your camera on Ebay and buy a Sony.

Another question: does your camera have the capability to put a memory stick in the slot and take digital photos SEPERATE from the miniDV ?
If so, the USB plugin is used for the photos. The FireWire is used to transfer video. If you don't have FireWire on your computer, just buy a PCI adapter. They are pretty cheap.

Just d/loaded the manual from the JVC site and this is what it says about uploading to a computer. The earlier link didn't work. Sorry bout that. The JVC site mustn't allow direct linking to the manual.
USB Cable:
Using this it's possible to...
Transfer still and moving images from the Memory Card.
Transfer still and moving images from the Tape.
Capture still and moving images in real time.
Use the camera as a webcam.
DV Cable:
It is also possible to transfer still and moving images from the camera to the PC with a DV connector using the provided software, software equipped with the PC or commercially available software.
*When connecting cables, open the camera's screen.
The camera connected via USB to a PC with XP on it should work Nikki.
There has to be something mssing for it not to. Once you get the XP issue sorted try it all again.
There should have been 2 sets of instructions with the camera;
1 operating manual and 1 software install guide.
Croc.
Edit: The DV (firewire) cable plugged into the camera and the PC, XP Home autodetected the camera and gives the option to use Win MovieMaker or other software.
Bought one this morning to compare with USB.
How are you going with it Nikki?
John
