I know how to do it with 2K Pro, but win 2k won't show all those colors on the boot screen. 2K can only show 16 colors so some pictures kinda suck when you reduce the number of colors. I know the XP boot screen can handle a higher resolution and color depth so it should look pretty cool. I think you can use the styles program to change the XP bootscreen so it should be pretty easy to do. You have to be carfull doing it on XP though because it will change the ntoskrnl file and may cause windows update to have a spazz. It doesn't seem to bother 2k, you just loose the fancy boot screen after an update sometimes and have to set it up again.

Just did the update bit and had no problems with XPHome Edition. Son has XPProfessional and no problems with that either but you are right, caution should be No.1 if you're not sure.
One interesting thing is that the pictures are d/loaded as zip files with 9 files in each d/load. Find the jpg in there. That can be opened and saved without using the install file to get it. A quick photochop and you have some backgrounds.
Glad you all enjoyed the trip.

Looks like the bug was fixed. There were some posts at one time stating that sp1 wouldn't install because ntoskrnl was the wrong version, something like that. I'm pretty sure it had to do with using styles xp. Good to know it works OK. I have XP installed as one of my boot options so I think I may play around with the boot screen. Oh and thanks for sharing.
I tried today to switch one and I had to do a repair on XP Pro(with SP1), don't know what I did wrong, I downloaded it, went into safe mode, into that sys 32 file thay asked about, and copy and pasted the one from the file download in there, it asked do u wish to replace this file and I said yes, then BAM hang..Can some one explain in better english how to do the safe mode switch??Thanks

LT-73 & others,
It's real easy with the "Boot Logon Loaders" proggies that they have available, I use them. It's real easy to use and I could teach you how to use them too [or atleast show you the links that explain it in really easy steps] just PM me.

and I figured what the hell, so here it is for the rest of you:
1. dwnld a boot screen(s) that you like to a folder for storage and most important read up on them to see if ppl have anything to say about it, i.e. bug'z and what not.
2. dwnld this app: LogonUI Boot Randomizer - full install instructions on the site. No special file modifications required either.
3. the maker of the proggy says you don't have to but I would make a backup of the "ntoskrnl.exe" file (just do a search for it in C:\) and store it somewhere safe.
4. like any other proggy just execute the LUIBR file/zip.
It's easy as that.
I've been using this proggy for over six months now and never had to reformat or fix anything - just follow the instructions.
Have fun!

Hey HawianGhost, thanks for that link for that Boot Randomizer, that was so easy, it isn't funny( having said that I'll still screw it up somehow)....Thumbs Up!!
Works great! Thanks for the thread. I now I have Britney Spears boot screen, login screen, and (for right now) a nude pic of Jennifer Love Hewitt for wallpaper
hmm for window xp users..
may choose to use tis software to help u to chg ur boot screen ..
Goto -> www.bootxp.net ..
read up on the instruction .. shld be quite easy to use it ..
In windows 98 the boot screen is contained in a file called logo.sys. It's really a bitmap file so you can open it with microsoft paint. Do a google search for logo.sys, you should get all kinds of info. Logo.sys will be a hidden file in the root directory of your win 98 partition. Their are also two other files to play with, they are in the windows directory. logow.sys is the please wait screen and logos.sys is the it is now safe to shut down screen
