how do I find if service is available w/out phone number? (more info...)

Post by grundy »

Here's my situation: I'm thinking of moving to a new area. My wife tellecommutes full time, so we need to have high speed internet access. The service providers that I've called (been on the phone, mostly on hold, for over two hours this morning) want a phone number - which I don't have.

How can I find out what areas (not which specific houses) will be able to receive high speed access? Or, how can I find out about a the availability at a specific house without a phone number. I'd really like to be able have at least some idea of the availibility before going house hunting.

I do intend to see if I can get phone numbers for houses through a realtor, but I'm looking for an easier solution.

The area in question is Pacifica, CA 94044. I've been talking to SBC. Does anybody have a suggestion of how I could go about getting a reasonable idea of which neighborhoods might have access?

Don't use neighbor's number...

Don't use a neighbor's phone number, they may be fed off a completely different cable, litespan, or cev. BUT, if the house you are looking at is between two houses(in the middle of a street for instance, not a corner house), then that would work. By putting in the neighbors' numbers at SBC.com, you'll get a quick answer to see if it is available or not. You can also try calling the helpdesk at the number listed on the website. SBC usually doesn't hand out information regarding as to WHEN an area will be turned up due to competition reasons.
